GAME RECAP

Scottie Pippen collected 27 points and 11 rebounds and Michael Jordan added 24 points as the Chicago Bulls notched their sixth straight victory with a 111-88 rout of the Boston Celtics, who have lost seven of their last eight games.

Pippen netted 21 of his points in the first half as the Bulls carved a 56-45 lead at the break. Boston closed within seven points midway through the final quarter but Jordan and Toni Kukoc contributed four points apiece during a 17-2 burst that cemented the victory.

"I see that we're starting to focus, and we're working on sharpening our tools," said Jordan. "Our transition game is better, our passing is better, and this is the best time for that to happen, going into the playoffs. When the playoffs get here I hope we'll be real, real sharp at that time."

Pippen hit 11-of-20 from the field and handed out six assists for the Bulls, who shot 54 percent (43-of-80) and held a commanding 46-27 advantage on the backboards, including a 19-6 edge on the offensive glass.

"That game seemed to be played in a hurry out there tonight," Chicago coach Phil Jackson said. "There was a lot of fast-breaking, a lot of transition. Scottie had a great floor game for us tonight. He was all over the place."

Kukoc had 17 points and Dennis Rodman totaled 12 and 14 rebounds for Chicago, which won for the 10th time in 11 games to improve the NBA's best record to 52-17.

Antoine Walker scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Walter McCarty chipped in with 19 points as the Celtics suffered their sixth consecutive road defeat.

Leading 30-24 after one period, the Bulls used an 8-0 burst to take a double-digit advantage. Pippen stroked a 10-footer for the first of his 13 second-quarter points and Randy Brown followed with a lay-in before Pippen capped the surge with consecutive dunks for a 38-27 lead.

Almost singlehandedly, Walker brought Boston back, scoring all eight of his second-quarter points as the Celtics closed within 42-39. But Pippen answered, scoring five points to match teammate Steve Kerr as Chicago reeled off 10 straight points.

The Bulls hit 9-of-14 shots in the second period and, after cooling off somewhat in the third, went on to hit a blazing 73 percent (11-of-15) from the field in the final period.

After building as much as an 18-point bulge in the third quarter, Chicago had its lead dwindle to 85-78 on Walker's layup with 8:53 remaining in the final period.

But Scott Burrell answered with a 22-footer and Brown followed with a lay-in off a feed from Kukoc -- who came on strong with 11 points and five of his 10 assists in the fourth quarter -- as the Bulls pulled away, taking a 108-84 advantage on a pair of free throws by Kukoc.

"The Celtics gave us a good battle," Kukoc said. "They are a young team, and they always try to run by you. This is the NBA, 82 games takes its toll on everybody, including young teams."

Dana Barros had 14 points but Ron Mercer was held to eight points on 3-of-12 shooting. Reserves Tyus Edney and Greg Minor each added six points for the Celtics, who had snapped a six-game losing streak with a victory over Philadelphia on Sunday.

"This was not a good performance by us tonight," said Celtics coach Rick Pitino. "We couldn't press them very much tonight. We were too tired from last night's game."

Chicago did not score for the first 3:09 of the game as McCarty and Barros stroked three-pointers for a 6-0 Boston lead.
