GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 24 points and Bobby Phills added 17 as the streaking Charlotte Hornets cruised to their franchise record seventh straight road victory and their 13th win in the last 14 games, 106-89, over the Toronto Raptors.

Phills, who also tied a season high with five steals, started a 13-4 burst with a three-pointer with 3:46 left in the third quarter and Rice capped it with a three-pointer 2:21 later, giving Charlotte a 79-59 lead with 1:25 left in the period.

The Hornets shot 8-of-15 from behind the arc and 46 percent (41-of-89) from the field.

"(This was) a strange game," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "I haven't seen us miss as many layups and free throws but still be able to dominate. I guess it was tough for the guys after three days off."

"This team is very dangerous," Rice added. "We're playing the best basketball we've played all season at both ends of the floor. We wanted to play aggressive right from the start. Tonight we played with (confidence)."

Rice led the team in scoring for the eighth time in the last 10 games. He scored 38 points and hit seven three-pointers in a 109-88 victory the last time the clubs met on January 19th. Tonight, Rice handed the Hornets their biggest lead, 90-68, with a three-pointer with 9:12 left.

David Wesley chipped in 10 points and matched a career high with 14 assists for Charlotte, which last lost on the road February 20th in Phoenix. The Hornets' recent stretch has them entrenched in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, three games ahead of the Atlanta Hawks for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Toronto got within 60-50 on Doug Christie's free throws with 6:26 left in the third quarter but could not mount any kind of comeback. Its only lead was 2-0.

"We got off to a poor start shooting the basketball," explained Toronto coach Butch Carter. "In the third quarter our guys just struggled. I think they got really tired. We just couldn't get it going."

Anthony Mason added 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Matt Geiger scored 15 points for Charlotte, including six in a 10-2 first-quarter run that put the Hornets ahead for good.

"We've got to stay hungry," said Mason. "You can have a great season but it only matters in the playoffs. We're just trying to stay a little focused as we get ready for the playoffs."

Marcus Camby scored 20 points for the Raptors, who own the worst record in the East. They have lost three straight overall and 10 of their last 12. Toronto has lost all four meetings with Charlotte this season and 21 of 23 games with divisional foes.

John Wallace totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who shot just 37 percent from the field, including 2-of-15 from three-point range, and committed 19 turnovers. Christie, Chauncey Billups and Dee Brown -- the team's top three guards -- combined for 25 points on 8-of-35 shooting.

"The shots weren't falling. They just weren't falling," said Brown. "The frontcourt did a great job tonight. The backcourt didn't. The backcourt took a hit for that loss."

Toronto forward Tracy McGrady suffered a right hand injury in the fourth quarter after attempting to grab a rebound. X-rays were negative and he was diagnosed with a swollen right hand. He is doubtful for Thursday's game with Cleveland.
