GAME RECAP

Grant Hill had 22 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds and Jerry Stackhouse scored 10 of his 22 points in a pivotal second-period run, leading the surging Detroit Pistons to a 103-94 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

Joe Dumars contributed 17 points for Detroit, which matched its season-high four-game winning streak and moved within two games of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Stackhouse started and finished a 23-8 run that put the Pistons ahead to stay as Detroit outscored San Antonio, 26-14, in the second quarter. His layup cut San Antonio's lead to 33-32 with 9:36 left in the second and, after a basket by David Robinson, he gave the Pistons the lead for good, 37-35, on a jumper with 6:57 to go. Stackhouse converted two free throws with 41 seconds left to cap the burst and give Detroit a 53-41 lead.

"We are playing as good of basketball as we have all season, at least since I've been here," Stackhouse said. "Everybody has accepted their role in what we are doing. We knew they were going to make a run, they are too good of a team not to. When they made the run and got back into the game late we sustained it and continued to do the things we know we can do."

San Antonio shot an abysmal 27 percent (6-for-22) from the field in the period and allowed an opponent to score 100 points for the first time since a 106-105 loss to the Seattle SuperSonics on February 11th.

Robinson had 29 points and nine rebounds and Tim Duncan added 25 and 12 for the Spurs, who had won four of their last five games. However, they have lost four of the last five meetings with the Pistons and have not won in Detroit since March 27th, 1995.

"Those guys are monsters, I don't know how you play them," Pistons coach Alvin Gentry said of Robinson and Duncan. "What we tried to do was double back on them and get the ball out of their hands. Those guys are a little bit like Grant in that they pick their time on the floor and they can make plays and create plays for other guys. Even when they cut it to four, Joe stepped forward and Grant stepped forward and they basically said, `Don't worry, we still have everything under control.'"

Vinny Del Negro scored 21 points for San Antonio, which remained two games ahead of fifth-place Phoenix in the race for fourth place in the Western Conference.

Spurs forward Chuck Person left the game in third period with a back injury and point guard Avery Johnson did not return after suffering a pinched nerve in his hip in the fourth period. Both are listed as day-to-day.

The Pistons kept the lead above double digits throughout the third period and built it as much as 17 points when Don Reid dunked to make it 63-47 with 9:28 to play. Detroit matched that margin two more times, the final time at 75-59 when Stackhouse sank a 19-footer with 3:51 left.

The Spurs trailed 80-67 after three periods but started the fourth quarter with a 13-4 burst. Robinson and Duncan each scored four points in the run that ended on Reggie Geary's jumper with 7:41 to play.

But San Antonio pulled no closer as Dumars hit a jumper and Hill and Stackhouse each followed with a pair of free throws to bring the lead to 90-80 with 6:28 to go. The Spurs failed to cut the deficit under seven points thereafter.

"We got it down to four and we thought we had it turned around," Robinson said. "But we made some dumb mistakes, turnovers and fouls. Even before those guys got hurt we messed our rhythm up. We got ourselves into this, it's really disappointing. Detroit played really well and we didn't respond. They were aggressive in going to the rim."

"We feel like we're playing our best basketball in the last week or two," Hill said. "We've got a lot of confidence. Before the game Alvin said, `Hey, when we score 100 points at home we're 12-0.' They wanted to run, so he said, `Let's go out and run at them.' We went out there and I guess now we're 13-0."
