GAME RECAP

Kevin Willis scored 22 points and Hakeem Olajuwon added 16 and 11 rebounds as the Houston Rockets overcame the loss of two starters to record their seventh victory in eight games, 86-81 over the Indiana Pacers.

Indiana had a chance to force overtime but missed a pair of three-pointers in the final seconds. With Houston leading 84-81, Mark Jackson misfired on a three-pointer with eight seconds left. Rik Smits grabbed the rebound and fed Reggie Miller, who failed to connect from beyond the arc with three seconds to go.

Houston's Matt Maloney rebounded Miller's shot and was fouled. Maloney, who had eight assists, went to the line and drained both free throws -- his only points of the game -- to seal the victory.

"I tried to do the little things out there, I wish I could have shot better," said Maloney, who was 0-for-4 from the field. "We had some guys get hot and when they were double-teamed, they were able to find the open man. Down the stretch they made it a tough game."

Olajuwon, who netted nine fourth-quarter points, notched his 15th double-double of the season and Othella Harrington contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Rockets, who were without the services of leading scorer Clyde Drexler and leading rebounder Charles Barkley, both of whom missed their second straight game.

Drexler is out with a strained right groin while Barkley is sidelined with a left shoulder strain.

"This was a tremendous character victory," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We grinded it shorthanded and played hard. We had an excuse, two of our best players were out, but we went out there and got the job done."

The Rockets, who are seventh in the Western Conference, pulled within one-half game of the idle Portland Trail Blazers and remained 1 1/2 games in front of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Indiana (48-21) dropped to 25-8 at home and fell one-half game behind Miami for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

Miller and Chris Mullin scored 16 points apiece for the Pacers, who were unable to overcome a woeful third quarter in which they shot just 29 percent (7-of-24) from the field, including 0-of-5 from three-point range.

The Pacers matched a season low by shooting just 33.8 percent (26-of-77). Smits finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Pacers held a 44-43 edge on the boards. Jackson dished out six assists.

Mullin scored 12 first-half points as Indiana built a 41-37 lead at the break.

"I thought we played pretty good defense in the first half, but we couldn't make a shot," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "I thought we'd come out in the third quarter and really go after them. But in the second half we really didn't come out and play and when you shoot 33 percent, you're not going to win."

Houston trailed 47-46 midway through the third quarter, but a layup by Willis gave the Rockets the lead for good with 6:55 remaining, triggering a 14-4 run.

Willis capped the burst with a six-foot hook shot that made it 60-51 with 2:53 left in the period. Willis contributed seven points during the spurt while Matt Bullard added five.

Brent Price's layup with 7:29 to play gave Houston its largest lead of the game, 76-63. After the teams traded baskets, Indiana responded with a 12-2 run to close within a hoop.

Smits started the burst with a free throw to make it 80-70 with 3:22 left. Miller and Mullin followed with three-pointers to cut the deficit to four points. After a layup by Jackson made it 80-78 with 1:21 to go, Olajuwon quieted the crowd with a layup with 1:05 remaining.

Maloney received a technical foul for protesting a call. Mullin hit the technical foul shot and Jackson converted both free throws, cutting the deficit to 82-81 with 50 seconds left. But Olajuwon's turnaround jumper pushed the lead to 84-81 with 29 seconds to play.

"It was one of those moves you're forced to create," Olajuwon said of his shot. "But, I've done that before. In difficult positions you have to do what you can. We were focused to win and we had great intensity."
