GAME RECAP

Walt Williams scored 15 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Portland Trail Blazers clinched their 16th straight postseason appearance with a 108-102 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Arvydas Sabonis scored 24 points for the Blazers, who celebrated the return of point guard Damon Stoudamire by extending the longest current postseason streak in the NBA and third-longest in professional sports. Only the Chicago Blackhawks, who have made 28 straight trips, and St. Louis Blues (18) of the National Hockey League have longer active streaks.

Stoudamire, who had missed 10 games with a sprained right ankle, had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists as Portland snapped a three-game losing streak.

"It wasn't an easy game for us, but we still won," Stoudamire said. "We found a way to win and that is what matters. "It felt good to get back on the court. It felt like starting all over again. I was close to 100 percent tonight."

Bryant Reeves scored 31 points for the Grizzlies, who have lost eight of their last nine games and 14 straight on the road.

Vancouver led by as many as nine points in the third quarter and was still ahead 86-80 early in the fourth. But Kelvin Cato's bucket with 10:17 to play ignited a 10-2 spurt and the Blazers grabbed a 90-88 lead on a pair of free throws by Williams with 6:56 to go.

The Grizzlies tied it twice more, the final time at 97-97 after Blue Edwards' free throw with 3:26 remaining. But Williams answered with a foul shot at the 2:54 mark and Sabonis dunked 24 seconds later for a 100-97 advantage. Reeves sank two free throws for Vancouver, but Williams again answered with two from the foul line to keep the lead at three points with 81 seconds left.

"We got into a mode where everybody was waiting for the other guy to take the shot," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "We just were not trying to make things happen. And then if the final quarter we were standing around and weren't attacking the basket on a consistent basis. While we were standing around, they caught us."

Vancouver finally got within one when Lee Mayberry buried a three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to make it 103-102. But Williams hit four free throws in the final 18 seconds and Brian Grant made one to keep the Blazers ahead.

"I was able to make some free throws and we got a win," Williams said. "We can't continue to keep playing the way we have been and expect to turn it up in the playoffs. They were hot, making outside shots, but we were playing more physical at the end of the game and stopped them on their end of the floor."

With his 12-of-14 showing from the foul line -- all in the fourth quarter -- Williams tied Portland's season high for free throws in a game.

Reeves got off to a fast start with 12 first-quarter points, helping the Grizzlies to a 30-25 lead. The lead was three at halftime and Vancouver opened its largest advantage at 68-59 on a layup by Reeves with 8:17 left in the third period.

Grant collected 18 points and 12 rebounds and Jermaine O'Neal added 14 points for the Blazers, who shot 48 percent (35-of-73) from the field and outrebounded the Grizzlies, 46-31.

"We played a lot better with Damon in there," said O'Neal, who hyperextended his left knee on Tuesday. "With this lineup, we become a fast-break team. We know what we have to do. We got the win tonight and now we have to go on the road and play a tough Sacramento team."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 19 points and Mayberry had 14 and seven assists for Vancouver, which shot 46 percent (38-of-83).
