GAME RECAP

Reserve Derek Strong scored 20 points and Danny Schayes added 10 and nine rebounds while shutting down Hakeem Olajuwon as the Orlando Magic netted coach Chuck Daly his 600th career victory with a 100-75 rout of the Houston Rockets.

Daly, who led the Detroit Pistons's rugged "Bad Boys" to back-to-back NBA Championships in 1989 and 1990 as well as guiding the original U.S. Olympic Dream Team to gold in 1992, improved his lifetime mark to 600-414. It is Daly's 12th full season of coaching but first with the Magic. In his career Daly has never coached a sub-.500 team. Orlando is 36-35.

"We played about as well as we played all year, particularly defensively," said Daly. "We were very emotional and very aggressive. And when you do that it translates into good defense."

The win, coupled with losses by New Jersey and Washington, lifted the Magic in a tie for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Magic had six scorers in double figures and committed just 11 turnovers while turning 24 Houston miscues into 25 points. Schayes played a big part in that differential, frustrating Olajuwon -- who scored just 12 points on 6-of-13 shooting -- into committing six turnovers.

"He (Olajuwon) doesn't really like physical play so you have to be physical with him and try to push him away off the box to make his catches," said Schayes. "He is so good with the ball you have to make it hard for him to have it where he wants it."

"It's not an individual thing, they had people doing their job," Olajuwon. "They took advantage of the system."

Strong led the way with eight points in the decisive second quarter as the Magic took control with a pair of runs. Leading 22-19 after one period, they carried a 48-33 advantage into the break after David Benoit capped an 11-4 surge with a free throw with 3.8 seconds to play in the half.

Kevin Willis had 20 points for Houston, which lost its eighth straight regular-season meeting with Orlando and fell to 2-2 on its five-game road swing.

Houston's Clyde Drexler did not play due to a groin strain, but Charles Barkley, who missed the last two games with a shoulder strain, was in the lineup -- most of the way. Barkley, who scored eight points but was ejected for collecting his second technical foul with 9:02 left in the fourth quarter, was scathing in his indictment of official Jack Nies following the game.

"I would like to say one thing about Jack Nies, I think he's a gutless offical who holds grudges," stated Barkley. For him to toss me for no reason... I've always, after an altercation, have told you the truth. He's a gutless man, he's a gutless official who holds grudges. That's all I've got to say.

"I didn't say anything to him (Nies)," Barkley continued. "But he's a gutless man, he's a gutless official and he holds grudges. And you all (can) print that, I don't want the NBA to call me on it."

No one else managed to score in double figures for the Rockets, who shot 46 percent (31-of-67) from the field and were held to their third-lowest point total of the season. Olajuwon grabbed 13 rebounds, but Orlando still held a 38-31 edge on the backboards.

Horace Grant scored 19 points, Bo Outlaw had 13, seven assists and four rebounds and Derek Harper collected 13 points and nine assists as the Magic shot 50 percent (45-of-90) from the field without Nick Anderson, who is sidelined with a strained left hamstring.

Mark Price added 11 points and five assists and Benoit recorded seven points and seven rebounds for Orlando, which avoided a three-game losing streak but posted just its fourth win in 10 games.

The Rockets were done in by 4-of-18 shooting in their 14-point second quarter. The Magic scored 11 of the first 14 points of the quarter, but led just 37-29 with 3 1/2 minutes to go. Then Benoit got things rolling with a dunk as Orlando pulled away.

Orlando built upon its lead with balanced scoring, as seven different players made the first seven buckets of the third quarter for a 64-46 lead.
