GAME RECAP

Reggie Miller scored Indiana's first nine points and finished with 14 of his 24 points in the first quarter before being ejected early in the second half as the Pacers set a season high for points in a 133-96 rout of the red-hot Charlotte Hornets.

Rik Smits also scored 24, on 12-of-16 shooting from the field, and added 13 rebounds en route to his 14th double-double of the season. The 133 points scored were the most by the Pacers since scorching Philadelphia 133-88 on April 22nd, 1994.

"It was one of those nights everything went well," Smits said. "Reggie set the tone right away and was phenomenal. We want the home court advantage and we played like it tonight."

Miller opened the game with a rare four-point play, draining a 25-footer while being fouled by Bobby Phills. After converting the free throw, Charlotte's Matt Geiger hit a jumper. But Miller nailed another three-pointer and followed with a 20-footer, giving the Pacers a seven-point lead, 9-2, just 73 seconds into the contest.

A short jumper by the Hornets' Anthony Mason made it an 11-8 game with 9:16 remaining in the period, but a running jumper by Miller started a 9-0 run that left Indiana ahead 20-8 with seven minutes remaining.

Miller hit his third three-point goal of the quarter with 3:04 to play to give the Pacers a 31-15 edge. Chris Mullin added 12 first-quarter points for Indiana, which shot 58 percent (15-of-26) in the the opening quarter en route to a 36-22 lead.

"We have to give Reggie a lot of credit," Indiana's Antonio Davis said. "He got off to a great start and we all fed off that. It's fun when everybody comes ready to play."

The game got a bit ugly with 5:50 to play in the third quarter. Charlotte's Vlade Divac blocked Dale Davis' shot and elbowed Miller as David Wesley scored on a layup that gave the Pacers a 90-59 lead. As the teams moved up the floor, Miller set a pick and delivered an elbow under Divac's chin and was ejected by referee Dan Crawford.

"When you are beating a team like that, that's not something that should happen," Charlotte's Glen Rice said.

Charlotte, which had its seven-game road winning streak snapped and lost for just the second time in its last 17 games overall, was paced by Wesley's 21 points. Divac added 13 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.

Rice, who is the Hornets' leading scorer at 22.8 points per game, was held to just six points on 1-of-11 shooting from the floor including 0-for-4 from beyond the arc.

"It's just one of those nights," he explained. "They shot well, we did not."

"Anytime Glen Rice shoots 1-of-11, I'd hate to be the guy guarding him the next game," Pacers coach Larry Bird said.

The Hornets, who shot just 35 percent (31-for-89) for the game, drew within 103-80, with 9:46 to play in the game before Jalen Rose scored 12 of his 20 points during a 23-6 run that gave the Pacers a 40-point lead.

"We came out aggressive and sustained it over the whole game," Rose said. "I think with two good teams playing well, it surprised a lot of people that we were able to beat them so easily."

Indiana, which defeated Charlotte at home for the first time in four tries, committed just four turnovers.
