GAME RECAP

Larry Johnson scored 23 points and hit a pair of key jumpers in overtime as the New York Knicks remained unbeaten on their West Coast trip with a 97-89 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

With the game tied 87-87, Johnson sank consecutive jumpers to give the Knicks a 91-87 advantage with 81 seconds left in the extra session.

Allan Houston added 20 points and John Starks netted 15 for the Knicks, who have won the first three games of a four-game swing. The road trip concludes at Seattle on Saturday.

Bryant Reeves scored 35 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for struggling Vancouver, which lost for the 23rd time in its last 26 games. Shareef Abdur-Raheem contributed 19 points for the Grizzlies, who fell to 1-5 all-time against New York.

The Knicks led 73-69 with 6:35 to play in the fourth quarter before Vancouver used an 8-0 run, capped by Reeves' dunk, for a 77-73 advantage with 4:14 to play.

Vancouver still led 79-75, but Charlie Ward single-handedly gave the Knicks the lead with three consecutive layups for an 81-79 lead at the 1:31 mark.

Reeves, who scored 12 points in the final period, answered with a jumper and a pair of free throws to put the Grizzlies in front 83-81 with 37 seconds left. The Knicks then missed three straight jumpers, but got the rebound on each miss. Charles Oakley drew a foul going up for a layup with nine seconds remaining and sank both foul shots to tie it.

"It was a tough game. They're a tough team with a lot of talent," Oakley said. "Big Country (Reeves) had a great game and made things happen. We found a way to win at the end, especially when we had the three big rebound chances. It was a total team win."

Vancouver gave the Knicks a golden opportunity to win the game in regulation. Bobby Hurley took the inbounds pass after Oakley's free throws and stepped in the backcourt, giving the Knicks a final shot. But Houston missed a jumper to send the game into overtime. Oakley finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Reeves sank a jumper to start the extra session before Ward made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 85-85. Oakley then hit a jumper before Blue Edwards answered with his own jumper to forge an 87-87 tie with 3:04 to go.

Johnson's consecutive jumpers put the Knicks ahead to stay and New York sealed the win with six free throws over the final minute of overtime.

Houston and Johnson scored 11 points apiece in the opening half as the Knicks held a 45-42 lead at intermission.

Johnson connected on 10-of-16 shots from the floor for the Knicks, who shot 46 percent (37-of-80). Reeves was 12-of-24 for Vancouver, which finished at 40 percent (33-of-83).

"I guess we did want to get into overtime," Reeves said. "But we lost the game when they got like six shots at the basket. We couldn't come up with the rebound. We just had to make one play and it's a different outcome."
