GAME RECAP

Hersey Hawkins scored eight points in a decisive first-quarter spurt as the Seattle SuperSonics opened a 22-point halftime lead and cruised to a 104-78 thrashing of the road-weary New York Knicks.

Vin Baker added 17 points and former Knick Greg Anthony and Gary Payton had 16 apiece for the Sonics, who remained one-half game behind Utah for the top seed in the Western Conference. Seattle also rebounded from Thursday's embarrassing loss at Golden State.

"We really wanted to put the Golden State game behind us and New York was the only team we hadn't beaten in the East," Baker said. "We have a lot of things at stake and this was one of those games where we had to bounce back and win."

Allan Houston netted 15 points and Larry Johnson scored 14 for the Knicks, who finished 3-1 on their West Coast road swing but suffered their worst loss since a 112-78 pounding at the hands of the Detroit Pistons on December 18th, 1996.

New York, playing its fourth game in five nights, fell one-half game behind Cleveland for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

The game was tied, 10-10, with 5:50 remaining in the opening quarter before the Sonics seized control with a 13-2 spurt. Hawkins hit a pair of three-pointers during the run, which put Seattle in control, 23-12, with 2:28 to play. Hawkins finished with 12 points.

Seattle pushed the lead to 27-14 after one quarter behind 10 points from Hawkins and six from Baker. The Sonics took their biggest lead of the half on Baker's layup at the 4:59 mark of the second period for a 45-22 cushion. Seattle held a 55-33 advantage at the break.

"We had a good flow from the start and they never seemed able to do the things they wanted to," Hawkins said. "We were able to take them out of a lot of their sets."

Baker scored 10 points in the first half and finished 8-of-9 from the field for the Sonics, who shot 54 percent (43-of-79) and forced 23 turnovers that led to 26 points. The Sonics also were on fire from beyond the arc, connecting on 11-of-21 three-pointers.

"If we play small and they start three players bigger than our smallest starter and we're not quicker than them, there is a big problem," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "You have to be able to handle the ball against them and limit their three-point shots. We did neither."

The Sonics opened the second half like they ended the first. Seattle scored the first 11 points, capped by Baker's three-point play, for a 66-33 bulge with 9:53 to play in the quarter. Seattle's biggest lead of the game was 93-54 with 8:41 remaining after Dale Ellis drained a jumper.
