GAME RECAP

Karl Malone netted 31 points to move into fourth place on the all-time scoring list and John Stockton added 13 and nine assists as the Utah Jazz routed the Los Angeles Lakers, 106-91, for their fifth straight victory.

Malone shot 7-of-16 from the field but capitalized on 17-of-18 chances from the free throw line while leading Utah in scoring for the 14th straight game. He moved past Moses Malone into fourth place with a free throw 3:44 into the game and has 27,440 career points.

Trailing 40-36, the Jazz took the lead for good in the second quarter with an 11-3 burst that was capped by Stockton's lay-in with 4:25 to go. The Lakers pulled within one early in the third period, but four different players scored in an 8-2 run that gave the Jazz some breathing room.

"I was happy that we came back after having to play last night," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We came in here and had a tough game, but our guys were focused on trying to get the job done. I thought we played pretty well to beat this team."

Shaquille O'Neal scored 31 points but tied a season low with just five rebounds and Nick Van Exel added 15 points for the Lakers, who fell three games behind Western Conference-leading Utah. Seattle, which posted a 104-78 victory over New York, remained one-half game behind the Jazz.

Malone paced an impressive 25-of-27 effort from the line from Utah, which also shot a solid 52 percent (38-of-73) from the field. But where the Jazz really dominated was on the boards, pulling down 42 rebounds to Los Angeles' 23.

"The big thing statistically as you look across the board was the rebounding," Los Angeles coach Del Harris said. "It was the story of the ballgame. All the rest of the stats are pretty even."

Jeff Hornacek had 11 points and Greg Foster had 10 and five rebounds in addition to keeping the powerful O'Neal off the glass.

"We had to break through against them and keep us in the race for the top spot," Hornacek said. "We played well and battled hard."

Utah led 31-26 after one quarter but fell behind by four early in the second period. But Chris Morris drilled a three-pointer, making it 40-39 with 7:35 remaining and igniting the deciding burst.

Elden Campbell's dunk with 8:10 left in the third quarter reduced the deficit to 63-62, but it was all Jazz thereafter. Hornacek nailed a jumper, Malone sank two free throws and Adam Keefe had a bucket to extend Utah's advantage to 69-62. The Jazz kept the pressure on, taking an 83-70 lead when Howard Eisley's three-pointer beat the third-period buzzer.

Utah pulled away in the fourth quarter for its 16th win in its last 17 games and sixth in a row at home.

Campbell finished with 12 points off the bench as Los Angeles had a five-game winning streak snapped. O'Neal, who was 10-of-17 from the field, was the only Laker starter with more than eight points.
