GAME RECAP

Lamond Murray scored 27 points and James Robinson added 24 as the Los Angeles Clippers snapped a five-game losing streak and avoided the Pacific Division cellar with a 108-86 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Robinson added eight assists and was one point shy of his season high in his best game of the season. He scored 15 points in the first half as Los Angeles opened a 53-42 lead. Murray scored seven points in a fourth-quarter burst that put away the game.

"(Murray) was active early and stayed that way throughout the game," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "He was challenged defensively tonight and remained strong. His offense took care of itself."

Fitch also was happy with Robinson's play.

"He's been playing big people like they aren't big," he said. "He has been getting better looks, taking better shots and going to the hole."

Isaac Austin added 14 points for the Clippers, who posted their second-biggest victory of the season and improved to 16-55, 1 1/2 games ahead of the Golden State Warriors, who lost to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Michael Finley scored 24 points for the Mavericks, who had won four of their last six games but lost to the Clippers for the third time in four meetings this season.

"This is as poorly as we've played in a while," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "I've expected a game or two like this and we've been playing quite well but tonight it just wasn't there."

The Clippers took the lead for good at 21-20 with 2:08 left in the first quarter on a dunk by Murray that triggered a 10-2 run. Robinson had four points in the burst and eight in the opening quarter, which ended with Los Angeles holding a 29-22 lead.

"We just wanted to come out and play aggressively," Murray said. "They are an explosive team, and we didn't want them to get a lead on us. We did a good job of stopping them defensively and getting out on the break for easy baskets."

Robinson, who shot 9-of-16 from the field, scored seven more points in the second quarter as the Clippers expanded their lead to 11 points at halftime. Los Angeles shot 48 percent (19-of-41) from the field while holding Dallas to 40 percent (14-of-35).

"I'm getting the opportunity to play and I'm not out there rushing my shot anymore," Robinson said. "You just have to go out and play your role and I'm making the most of my minutes."

A three-pointer by Finley cut the deficit to 66-58 with 4:42 to go in the third quarter but Darrick Martin made a 22-footer and Rodney Rogers dunked, rebuilding Los Angeles' lead to 70-58 with 3:53 to play in the period.

The Clippers led 78-65 after three quarters, but two free throws each from Martin Muursepp and Khalid Reeves pulled the Mavericks within nine points with 10:44 remaining. But Murray scored seven points in a 16-6 spurt capped by Pooh Richardson's layup that made it 94-75 with 4:18 to go.

Martin scored 11 points and Rogers added 10 and 10 rebounds for the Clippers, who had all five starters in double figures as they shot 49.5 percent (45-of-91), including 8-of-14 from behind the arc.

"If five out of eight guys have a good night and do what they're assigned to do then everything falls into place," Fitch said.

Hubert Davis scored 14 points for the Mavs, who shot 42 percent (33-of-79) and were beaten on the boards, 45-44. Finley made 10-of-16 shots.

"Mentally, I think a loss can get to you a little bit, especially when things have been going as bad as they have been," Finley said. "I think as a team we need to refocus and continue on."

Dallas center Shawn Bradley left in the second quarter with an upset stomach and did not return.
