GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 26 points and Dell Curry's layup with 6:15 left sparked a pivotal 11-1 burst as the hot-shooting Charlotte Hornets continued their recent dominance of the Philadelphia 76ers with a 101-93 victory.

David Wesley added 18 points and 10 assists for Charlotte, which had lost its last two games by a combined 52 points but won for the 17th time in 20 games.

Matt Geiger added 12 points and 12 rebounds and Anthony Mason contributed eight and 15 for the Hornets, who shot 56 percent from the field and beat the 76ers for the 10th straight time.

"We definitely needed to end the slide," Mason said. "It was a war. Philly showed a lot of poise, but we pulled through and came out on top in the end."

"When you get a win against anyone in this league, it's good," Rice said. "We came out strong but they got back into it. We just have to learn from this."

Philadelphia led 88-84 on a jumper by Tim Thomas but Charlotte scored 11 of the next 12 points to open a six-point lead with 2:58 to go. Vlade Divac, who finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, had four points during the spurt, which was capped by two free throws by Bobby Phills.

"It's nice to get a win and we really needed it," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "Vlade came alive in the second half. ... Last year we finished strong so hopefully we can continue to improve, and the last games of our season are against good teams."

Allen Iverson scored 28 points and Derrick Coleman added 12 and 13 rebounds for the 76ers, who have lost six of seven. Coleman was just 4-of-18 from the field as Philadelphia failed to post its highest win total since the 1991-92 season.

"We ran out of gas," said 76ers coach Larry Brown. "Some of our guys were really tired. We couldn't stop them down the stretch. We couldn't make our shots and couldn't stop them in the clutch and that's a bad combination."

Charlotte, seeking the fourth playoff berth in its nine-year exsistence, hasn't lost to Philadelphia since November 10th, 1995. The 76ers haven't beaten the Hornets in Charlotte since April 17th, 1992 -- a span of 12 games.

"We did not buckle down on defense and that is something you have to do to win," said Iverson. "Rice, Curry and Vlade played well together in the final few minutes in order to seal their win."

The Hornets scored the first 11 points of the contest and led 38-22 after one quarter. Phills had 14 in the period as Charlotte shot a blistering 16-of-21 from the field and held a 13-5 rebounding edge.

Philadelphia responded by opening the second quarter with a 16-4 burst to draw within 42-38 with 3:24 to go in the half. Iverson had 13 points in the quarter but the 76ers still trailed 54-49 at halftime.

"Iverson is just so unbelievable," Cowens added. "He's so quick and athletic and I think we paid a little too much attention to him."

The Sixers need one win to post their highest win total since the 1991-92 season, when they went 35-47.
