GAME RECAP

Tim Duncan had 25 points and 10 rebounds and David Robinson added 24 and eight to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 95-78 victory over the New York Knicks, their first win at Madison Square Garden in over six years.

Robinson scored 13 first-half points as the Spurs built a 59-47 advantage in route to their seventh victory in their last 10 road contests and 10th win in 13 games overall.

San Antonio won at New York for the first time since December 26th, 1991 and completed a sweep of the season series against the undersized Knicks. The Spurs started three seven-footers, while the Knicks have three centers on the injured list.

"We came in here knowing we have a big size advantage," Duncan said. "They had (Chris) Dudley down and of course (Patrick) Ewing down and we thought that we would use that to our advantage and off the bat we did."

The Spurs, who enjoyed a 40-26 edge in points in the paint, improved to 12-3 since the implementation of their seven-foot frontcourt.

"They're out there working as hard as they can," Robinson said. "But when you've got size like we have, it's very tough. We wanted to cut down on easy buckets and transition buckets. That made it tough for them to score."

The Spurs, forced onto the road due to the NCAA Tournament's Final Four in San Antonio, closed out their trip with a 4-1 mark, improving to 23-15 away from home this season.

San Antonio reached 50 wins and is holding down the fourth seed in the West, two games ahead of Phoenix and 2 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers.

Allan Houston scored 31 points and Charles Oakley added 16 for New York, which has dropped five of its last eight home games. The Knicks fell 1 1/2 games behind Cleveland for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

"They made shots and they are very good," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "But I don't like how we played at all. They out-quicked us to the ball, they wore us out, but I've been watching them and they wear everybody out."

New York began the second half with a 6-0 spurt capped by Oakley's dunk, closing to 57-45. But that was the closest the Knicks would get the rest of the way.

San Antonio, which continued to pound the ball inside against the undermanned Knicks, eventually built the lead to 76-55 on a pair of free throws by Robinson with 10:53 to play.

After Oakley's two free throws knotted the game at 26-26 early in the second quarter, the Spurs went on an 11-2 run, led by the front line of Duncan, Robinson and Will Perdue. Duncan netted seven points during the burst which was capped by a follow shot by Robinson that gave the Spurs a 37-28 lead with 8:43 left in the quarter.

"We didn't make shots, we were oversized, but that isn't an excuse," Cummings said. "You just want to know that every time you come to the arena that you've got an oppoortunity to win and it doesn't matter what the odds are because the odds are against us every night."

The Spurs began a seven-point run, triggered by Jaren Jackson's three-pointer. Former Knick Monty Williams recorded the final four points, giving the Spure a 44-30 margin with 6:01 to go in the first half.

Houston responded with five straight points to draw the Knicks within 44-35 with 5:01 to go, the last time the deficit was in single digits.

Robinson sparked San Antonio to an 11-0 burst with two free throws and Perdue capped the run to give the Spurs a 55-35 bulge with 1:50 left in the period. The Knicks finished their dismal second quarter shooting 6-of-18 from the field and getting outrebounded, 12-3.

John Starks shot 0-of-8 from the field and did not score in 30 minutes. New York shot 44 percent (36-of-82) from the field overall, including just 2-of-13 from beyond the arc.

San Antonio shot 49 percent (35-of-72) from the floor, including 5-of-10 from three-point range. They improved to 20-4 against the Eastern Conference and 37-3 when holding opponents under 90 points.
