GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen atoned for poor play down the stretch of regulation by combining for nine points in overtime as the Chicago Bulls posted their 18th straight home victory over the fading Detroit Pistons, 106-101.

Randy Brown bailed out Chicago's two superstars with a pair of free throws with 14 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter that forced a 95-95 tie and the extra session.

Pippen, who finished with 27 points, was held scoreless over the final 7:35 of the fourth quarter but nailed the first bucket of the overtime, a three-pointer that gave the Bulls the lead for good with 2:50 remaining.

"It wasn't easy," said Jordan. "We came out with a lackluster third quarter and we paid for it down the stretch. We had to grind out a win. Hopefully it was a good lesson for us."

Pippen had five points and Jordan, who went without a point for the last 11:35 of the fourth period, added four of his 26 in the final five minutes as the Bulls nosed out their 10th straight victory.

The red-hot Bulls own the league's best record at 56-17 and have won nine in a row, 13 of 15 and 21 of their last 23 games.

Grant Hill matched a season high with 37 points but missed a chance to win the game in regulation when his off-balance jumper from the foul line bounced off the backboard and the rim before falling away at the buzzer.

"At halftime, we talked about how we had to come out in the second half and play more aggressively," said Hill. "Jerry (Stackhouse) got us going. We also got some steals and baskets and worked our way back in. Unfortunately, we used so much energy getting into the game, we just wore out."

The Pistons have lost three straight after a four-game winning streak to fade from the Eastern Conference playoff picture. They have not won in Chicago since Isiah Thomas -- now an NBC commentator -- led them to a 106-81 victory on March 16th, 1990.

Stackhouse missed after Pippen's bucket and Jordan sank two free throws to make it 100-95. Hill managed two buckets around a fadeaway by Jordan but Pippen had a lay-in and Dennis Rodman sank two free throws to seal the win.

"We ran into a very energetic and enthusiastic team in the second half," Bulls coach Phil Jackson said. "I don't think we were prepared for their intensity. Luckily we were able to survive the game."

Rodman pulled down 18 rebounds, including four in overtime. He also hit a key free throw with 42 seconds left in regulation that sliced the margin to 95-93.

On the ensuing possession, Scott Burrell partially blocked Stackhouse's wild driving layup attempt before Jordan found Brown alone underneath the basket. Brown, a 72 percent foul shooter, responded with his only points of the game.

Ron Harper netted 12 points and Burrell added 10 for the Bulls, who shot 48 percent (39-of-82) from the floor and made 23-of-24 free throws. Steve Kerr contributed nine points but Kukoc was held to just seven on 2-of-6 shooting.

Former Bull Brian Williams totaled 27 points and 13 rebounds and Stackhouse chipped in with 22 points off the bench for Detroit, which shot 51 percent (40-of-79) but fell 3-4 in overtime and 7-17 in divisional play.

Jordan's lone bucket of the fourth quarter came 21 seconds in and gave the Bulls an 84-74 cushion.

But Detroit took the lead with a 12-0 burst that featured seven points by Hill. The teams traded baskets until Hill scored twice to give the Pistons a 90-86 edge with 6:47 to go.

The Bulls took a 46-29 advantage when Burrell's layup with 3:10 to play in the first half capped a 15-2 burst. He added a three-pointer 1.7 seconds before the halftime buzzer as Chicago took a 56-41 lead into the break.
