Game Recap

Shaquille O'Neal took advantage of fellow All-Star Jayson Williams' absence in the pivot by scoring a Lakers career-high 50 points as Los Angeles cruised to a 117-106 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

O'Neal went 18-of-26 from the field and 14-of-20 from the line while collecting nine rebounds. He missed a three-pointer from the left corner with nine seconds left that would have tied his career-high, established with Orlando against the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 20th, 1994.

"Luckily, my shots were falling," O'Neal said. "I just wanted to come out and play a complete game. They beat us pretty bad the last time."

Los Angeles' third straight win avanged a 106-95 home loss to New Jersey back on January 28th.

O'Neal set the tone in the first quarter, manhandling Rony Seikaly and reserve Chris Gatling for 17 points to propel the Lakers to a 34-26 lead after 12 minutes. He continued to have the hot hand in the second quarter and ended the first half with 26 points as Los Angeles pulled away for a 63-48 advantage. The Nets failed to threaten thereafter.

"Shaq was pretty good, Shaq is the man," said Lakers coach Del Harris. "He's the most dominating force on the inside today. Behind Michael (Jordan), he's the most devastating player in the game. Of course, he's 10 years younger. He's really been playing strong, strong basketball for the last 20 games. It's the first time he's been close to 100 percent all year."

Williams, out for the rest of the regular season with a broken thumb, is missing a critical stretch run for the Nets, who despite the loss, still own the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference by one-half game over the idle Magic.

"We don't want to be a 40-42 organization," said Nets coach John Calipari. "We want to be better than that. But sometimes we just settle for playing the game and getting out of here. I think we got beat up at every position tonight."

Kobe Bryant added 20 points and Nick Van Exel netted 12 for the Lakers, who improved their road mark to a Western Conference-best 24-13 and remained within two games of conference leader Seattle.

Sam Cassell recorded 18 points, Kerry Kittles had 17 and Sherman Douglas 15 as New Jersey opened a four-game homestand.

O'Neal gave Los Angeles the lead for good just 20 seconds into the game with a 10-footer. Seikaly sank a free throw but a tip-in by Rick Fox and Robery Horry's dunk made it 6-1. The Nets chipped away and closed within 12-9 before O'Neal netted 11 points in an 18-4 burst that broke open the game.

O'Neal's point total was the highest by a Laker since current Dallas Maverick Cedric Ceballos recorded 50 against the Wolves on December 20th, 1995. He tied Washington's Tracy Murray for the NBA season high.

"Trust me, there will be plenty more 50's from Shaq," predicted Bryant. "When he had 40, we knew he was going to get 50. Once you get that close, you might as well go for it, you might as well go for the gusto."

The Lakers, who have won 13 of their last 15 games, shot 56 percent (43-of-77) from the floor. They have won the last 28 games in which they have shot over 50 percent.

The 6-10 Gatling collected 14 points and 12 rebounds but was unable to handle O'Neal.

New Jersey was able to pull within 106-95 with 2:38 to go in the final quarter on a driving lay-in by Cassell, but O'Neal answered with a layup of his own and drew a technical foul on Gatling.

After Bryant hit the free throw to extend the lead to 108-95, Calipari earned a technical foul of his own. O'Neal, uncharacteristically hit both free throws to give Los Angeles a 111-95 cushion.

Keith Van Horn had 14 points for the Nets, who shot 45 percent and surprisingly held a slight 48-43 rebounding edge. Seikaly was held to eight points and seven boards in 17 minutes.
