Game Recap

Gary Payton scored 22 points and Detlef Schrempf added 16 as the Seattle SuperSonics routed the Dallas Mavericks, 107-86, for their 12th straight home win.

Greg Anthony contributed 13 points and Hersey Hawkins had eight of his 12 during a key third-quarter spurt for the Sonics, who became just the third team in NBA history to win 55 games in six straight seasons, joining the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers.

Seattle, which got a season-low seven points from a foul-plagued Vin Baker, moved one-half game ahead of idle Utah for first place in the Western Conference.

"They stuck with us in the first half and had me nervous," Seattle coach George Karl said. "Early in the game they played a little better than we did. But in the second half when Vin got into foul trouble, we got more aggressive defensively. We trapped the ball and after that we shot the ball extremely well."

A.C. Green scored 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting for the Mavericks, who had won the first two meetings from the Sonics this season but fell to 7-30 on the road.

Seattle's lead was just 49-47 with 11:14 left in the third quarter before Hawkins scored eight straight points to ignite a 17-2 burst. He buried a pair of three-pointers around a 15-footer before Payton sank two free throws for a 59-47 advantage.

Michael Finley's jumper cut the lead to 10 with 8:35 remaining in the period, but Schrempf made one free throw before Jerome Kersey knocked down a 20-footer. Payton scored the final four points of the spurt on a pair of free throws and a layup for a 66-49 bulge with 6:40 to go in the third.

"Defensively in the third quarter we did a much better job," said Seattle's Dale Ellis. "In the first half we allowed them to get going. But it's hard to beat a team three times in a row and we're in a situation where we cannot afford to lose games."

Shawn Respert buried a three-pointer with 20 seconds left in the third to bring Dallas within 76-63, but Kersey's layup gave the Sonics a 15-point cushion entering the final period. The Mavericks got no closer than 13 points in the fourth and the lead grew as large as 24 points.

Seattle trailed for much of the second quarter and led by just one point on Green's bucket with 3:32 remaining in the period. But the Sonics closed the half on an 8-2 burst to take a 49-42 lead after a pair of free throws by Sam Perkins.

"They didn't give us a chance," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "They established early and they kicked our butts. We stayed with them for most of the first half, but in the final minutes of the half we had a letdown and that really hurt us. In the second half they dominated us and it wasn't even close."

Kersey and Ellis finished with 12 points apiece for the Sonics, who shot 46 percent (40-of-87) from the field and forced 22 turnovers, leading to 32 points.

Erick Strickland scored 16 points and Shawn Bradley added 13 for the Mavericks, who shot 41 percent (33-of-80) and held a 43-39 rebounding advantage. Finley, Dallas' leading scorer, was held to 10 points on 5-of-14 shooting. He had been averaging 24.2 points over his last six games.
