Game Recap

Antoine Walker drilled a 19-footer at the buzzer as the Boston Celtics rallied from an 18-point deficit for a 101-100 victory over the Detroit Pistons, who played the final 22 minutes without leading scorer Grant Hill.

The Celtics, who erased a seven-point deficit in the final 77 seconds, took possession with 20 seconds remaining after Pistons center Brian Williams fumbled the ball out of bounds.

Walker's shot banked in from the right wing and was his second buzzer-beater of the season. He also beat the Washington Wizards with a shot at the horn on January 28th.

"The shot was for Ron (Mercer), but (Joe) Dumars did a great job getting by him," said Walker. "I had to get some type of shot up. I threw it up and it went in off the glass. Once I jumped up, I got a good look, so I just tried to hit the rim."

"I told the guys to shoot at the buzzer because with their shooters I didn't want them to have another possession," added Celtics coach Rick Pitino.

Walker had 31 points and 12 rebounds for the Celtics, who trailed 90-72 with 8:45 remaining. Boston kept its slim playoff hopes alive, closing within 4 1/2 games of the eighth-place New Jersey Nets in the Eastern Conference.

"The longer I'm in this game, the less I believe it," said Pitino. "During the second half, I kept telling the guys that we were going to make a run. But when we were down 18 in the fourth, I figured the run just wasn't coming tonight. The better team lost tonight."

Hill, who scored a season-low two points on 1-of-4 shooting, left with 10:16 remaining in the third quarter with a lower back strain. The Pistons were leading 57-48 at the time. Hill is listed as day-to-day.

"Grant got hurt early in the game," said Pistons coach Alvin Gentry. "He got hurt in the first quarter. He tried to tough it and out play, but he just couldn't do it."

"Grant didn't have any points even before he got hurt, so we were doing the job on him," added Pitino. "What hurt us is that Brian Williams was unstoppable. We've played well against the best centers in the NBA but Brian Williams always kills us with that soft jumper."

Walker's jumper pulled Boston within 98-93 with 1:29 remaining. After Joe Dumars' basket gave Detroit a 100-93 lead with 1:17 left, the Celtics scored the game's final eight points.

Seldom-used Dontae Jones, who had played a combined six minutes in Boston's previous five games, drilled two three-pointers to slice Detroit's lead to 100-99 with 34 seconds left. Jones also had a three-point earlier in the quarter that pulled Boston within 92-78 with 6:41 left.

"The whole story of the night is really Dontae Jones," said Walker. "The three threes were really big, espcially the last two. It gave us momentum. We knew with Grant out, we still had a chance to come back. We knew they were going to be looking for scoring. It was going to be hard for them to score, so we knew we had an opportunity to come back."

Williams, who led the Pistons with 29 points, gave the Celtics a chance to set up for the last shot by fumbling the ball out of bounds as he was driving to the basket on Detroit's next possession.

Dumars added 20 points for the Pistons, who have dropped five straight to fall four games behind the Nets. Detroit needs to win its last seven games just to reach .500 after winning 54 games last season.

"I don't know if its killer instinct but we just haven't been able to put teams away," said Gentry. "We've played good basketball and we haven't been able to win the close games. Four of our last five have come down to losing in overtime, losing in overime, losing a two-point game and losing a one-point game."

The game marked the return of Celtics point guard Kenny Anderson, who dished out 11 assists. Anderson missed six games after played only four minutes against the Philadelphia 76ers on March 22nd due to tendinitis in his left knee. Boston coach Rick Pitino had said that Anderson would be out for the rest of the season.

Mercer added 16 points for Boston, which beat Detroit for only the third time in the last 12 meetings between the teams.
