Game Recap

Hersey Hawkins drained seven three-pointers and scored a season-high 29 points and Detlef Schrempf added 20 as the Seattle SuperSonics recorded their highest point total of the season in a 138-98 rout of the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Hawkins and Schrempf each scored 16 points in the first half to help the Sonics build a 66-47 lead at the break. They bumped the advantage to 30 early in the third quarter with a 12-2 run and went on to record the most points ever scored against Vancouver.

"I think it starts with my wristband," said Hawkins. "As long as I wear this little wristband, I'm OK. I broke it out after I had my two bad nights on the road. My wife gave it to me."

Former Grizzly Greg Anthony hit three three-pointers and Dale Ellis added two as Seattle connected on a franchise-record 17-of-31 shots from beyond the arc and remained one-half game ahead of Utah for the Western Conference's best record.

Vin Baker, coming off Thursday's season-low seven-point effort against Dallas, had 17 points and 11 rebounds to help Seattle end a three-game road losing streak.

"I think the `Hawk's' threes coming down were key," Baker said. "We started to hit some more big threes and it really started to open up from there."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 19 points and Bryant Reeves added 11 before leaving with a strained right hamstring in the third quarter for Vancouver, whose 25 turnovers were converted into 39 points by the Sonics.

It was Seattle's largest victory margin since a 44-point win over Toronto on January 15th, 1997, and the third-biggest road win in club history.

Seattle displayed the hot hand early, knocking down five three-pointers in the first six minutes. Hawkins had four and Schrempf one as the Sonics carved a 21-13 advantage with 5:58 to go.

Ellis scored 10 of his 14 points in the second quarter, including a pair of three-pointers that fueled a 10-0 run as Seattle grabbed a 54-36 lead with 3:56 to go.

The Sonics hit eight three-pointers and shot 53 percent from the field in the first half. They improved to 55 percent (52-of-95) from the floor overall.

Gary Payton collected 12 points, 13 assists and six rebounds and reserve Aaron Williams added 10 points for Seattle, which ran at every opportunity and posted a 46-18 edge on the break over the slow-footed Grizzlies.

Vancouver also shot well from long distance, hitting 11-of-17 three-pointers, but was able to convert on only 40 percent (26-of-64) from inside the arc.

With Seattle leading by 20 points and 8:40 to go in the third period, Hawkins got things rolling again with a three-pointer, touching off a a 12-2 burst that Schrempf completed at 83-53 with a pair of free throws.

With 3:54 left in the first quarter, Abdur-Rahim's three-pointer cut the deficit to 21-18. But Baker dunked and hit two free throws around Schrempf's short runner and three-pointer to end the threat.

"Blue (Edwards) told me on the bench that there'll be nights like this," Abdur-Rahim said. "Everybody will have a night when the (opposing) team just comes out on fire. You have to try to keep them close and pick away and try to get them fatigued. Tonight it didn't work. They're a much better basketball team than us."
