Game Recap

Michael Jordan scored 40 points and Scottie Pippen had 11 of his 20 in the fourth quarter as the Chicago Bulls pulled away to extend their season-high winning streak to 12 games with a 109-94 victory over the struggling Houston Rockets.

Scott Burrell also netted 13 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter for Chicago, which has won seven in a row on the road and recorded its longest overall winning streak since opening last season 12-0. The Bulls need one more win or an Indiana loss to clinch their third straight Central Division title.

Clyde Drexler tallied 20 points and Mario Elie added 18 for Houston, which has lost a season-high six consecutive games since winning seven of eight contests. The Rockets (37-38) dipped below .500 for the first time since March 9th, but already have clinched a playoff berth in the Western Conference.

The Bulls, who beat the Rockets by six points at the United Center on January 18th, swept the season series for the second time in three years and won in Houston for just the second time in their last 10 tries.

Houston jumped out to a 15-8 lead 7:18 into the game, but Chicago scored the next nine points over the next 2 1/2 minutes to move ahead. The Rockets led 21-20 after the first 12 minutes and were down 44-43 at the break.

Chicago held a 54-53 lead before opened its advantage with a 9-2 run, capped by Jordan's wide-open layup with 3:52 to go in the third quarter. But Houston retaliated with its own 9-2 spurt, narrowing the gap to 65-64 on Elie's slam with 1:52 left.

Jordan had 30 points through three quarters as Chicago led 71-66. The Bulls were clinging to a three-point lead until Burrell nailed a three-pointer and Pippen had a three-pointer and a jumper to extend the lead to 81-70 with 9:07 to play.

"In the first half we did not shoot the ball well, but I told our guys to keep shooting and make a few more," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. "I thought we picked it up a notch in the second half. We also did a variety of things defensively so they could not see a pattern to our double-teams."

Eddie Johnson's two foul shots drew Houston within 83-74 with 8:17 remaining before Burrell made a pair of three-pointers and Jordan converted a three-point play to cap a 13-4 burst and make it 96-78 with 4:39 to go.

"We came out in the second half and made some adjustments," said Jordan. "We got some of our guys in a rhythm and Scott was hitting some big shots. When the other guys get going, that really helps my game."

Bill Wennington contributed 14 points and Dennis Rodman had 12 rebounds and eight assists for Chicago, which made 6-of-13 three-point tries and 15-of-18 foul shots. Pippen added eight assists and tied a career high with five blocked shots.

"We shot the ball much better in the second half," said Pippen. "We had good shots in the first half that didn't go in. But in the second half, we made those shots and that was the difference in the game. Defensively, we also eliminated the big game by their superstars."

Jordan scored at least 40 points for the 11th time this season and second game in a row. Including playoffs, he has turned the trick 194 times in his career.

"I actually believe he is better now than when he was younger," said Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "He is so quick and so smart that he is rarely caught in an uncomfortable situation. He is amazing. Burrell was a big factor tonight. He has developed an outside shot and really put the nails in our coffin."

Hakeem Olajuwon totaled 16 points and 12 boards, while Charles Barkley had 10, 11 and five assists as Houston shot 46 percent (36-of-79) from the field and won the rebounding battle, 40-35.

"I really enjoyed playing against him (Jordan), although with the foul situation (five fouls), there wasn't a lot of that," said Drexler, who is retiring at the end of the season to coach at the University of Houston. "I'm starting to think that that might not be a coincidence. It's been a great rivalry with Michael. He is a great player and I told him to send me his kids."
