Game Recap

Allen Iverson had 36 points, nine rebounds and eight assists as the Philadelphia 76ers established season highs for points in a half and game with a 116-104 victory over the Toronto Raptors, who have lost nine straight games.

Iverson shot 14-of-25 from the field and matched his season high in rebounds as the 76ers never trailed in their third straight win. They bolted to a 63-43 halftime lead and surpassed their previous high of 115 points at Vancouver on January 1st.

"I didn't get it, but I'm satisfied because we got the win," said Iverson, who fell short of his first career triple-double. "We were trying to put them away at the end of the game. I wasn't worrying about the triple-double, I just wanted to end the game."

Philadelphia also received 21 points from Derrick Coleman and 16 from Theo Ratliff as it shot 51 percent (44-of-86) from the field and defeated Toronto for the first time in three meetings this season.

"If you look at all the trades we've made, we've brought in a lot of guys who are team players," 76ers coach Larry Brown said. "Guys with good character and guys who don't command the ball. Since that happened, Allen and Derrick have had the opportunity to get their hands on the ball a lot more."

Gary Trent had 25 points and 11 rebounds and Doug Christie scored 20 points for the Raptors (15-59), who have not won since March 19th against Denver and are within two of matching the club record for losses in a season, set in their inaugural 1995-96 campaign.

"Allen knew what to do. He put the ball in the basket, he shot the ball better than I've seen him shoot in the last eight to 10 games," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "Derrick Coleman had the inside game going. Once they got their cushion, we couldn't overcome it."

Toronto managed three ties in the first 4 1/2 minutes before Philadelphia went on an 11-2 run to take the lead for good. Tim Thomas scored seven of his 11 points in the burst, which Coleman capped at 19-8 with a six-footer with 4:21 left in the opening quarter.

A tip-in by John Wallace, who scored 10 points, cut the deficit to 21-17 but the Sixers scored the last nine points of the period. Iverson had a tip-in and three assists in the burst as Philadelphia opened a 30-17 lead.

"We couldn't overcome the 30 percent shooting in the first quarter," Carter said.

After the teams traded points to open the second quarter, the 76ers scored 13 of the next 17 points. Ratliff contributed six and the lead grew to 45-26 on Eric Snow's layup with 7:13 left.

Toronto's Dee Brown made a three-pointer before Philadelphia rattled off eight straight points, including six by Mark Davis, whose dunk gave the Sixers their largest lead at 55-31 with 4:14 to go in the first half.

Philadelphia shot 58 percent (26-of-45) in the first half while holding Toronto to 40 percent (16-of-40). Iverson had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Coleman and Ratliff each scored 12.

Iverson turned up his offense in the third quarter, scoring 14 points. The Raptors never got closer than 16 points and trailed 93-75 entering the final period. Philadelphia led by at least 10 points thereafter.

Aaron McKie scored 11 points for the Sixers, who had all five starters in double figures and committed just 10 turnovers. Iverson was 7-of-7 from the line and had four steals without a turnover.

"He played great, I'm real proud of him," Brown said. "No turnovers, nine rebounds, eight assists and he tried to get everybody involved."

"The turnover thing starts with me," Iverson said. "When I'm not turning it over, when I have control of the ball, it sends a message to everybody else to make smart plays."

Brown scored 16 points and teenager Tracy McGrady added 14 and 13 rebounds for the Raptors, who shot 44 percent (37-of-84) and held a 43-41 rebounding edge.
