Game Recap

Sam Cassell made 19 of 20 free throw attempts and scored 29 points, leading the New Jersey Nets to their third straight victory, 117-104 over the Boston Celtics.

The win helped the Nets (40-36) maintain their hold on the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. New Jersey is 1 1/2 games ahead of Orlando and two games in front of Washington. The Nets also remained one game behind seventh-place New York.

"I missed the postseason last year," Cassell said. "I want to get back this year, so I come to play every night and the team comes to play with me. If we keep winning, we'll make a strong run into the playoffs.

"We played some good, tough defense and they missed some shots so we were able to convert," he added. "We're peaking at the right time and that's the key. Right now is the perfect time to peak."

Keith Van Horn added 24 points and 11 rebounds and Kerry Kittles had 21 points for the Nets, who have won four of their last five games. Cassell also chipped in with nine assists and four rebounds, and has averaged 31.3 points during New Jersey's winning streak.

The Nets were 33-of-38 from the foul line, while Boston made just 8-of-12 free throws. Cassell set career highs for free throws attempted and made.

"It's a big win to get to 40 for us," New Jersey coach John Calipari said. "Our organization has been down for a while. We have a young team, and our veterans are young. The best thing about tonight's win was that we got help from every person on the team. Everybody's doing their thing in helping us."

Antoine Walker scored 43 points, six short of his career high, on 18-of-26 shooting for the Celtics, who had a three-game winning streak broken. Walker's total set a FleetCenter record for the most by an individual player. Ron Mercer added 18 points and six rebounds and Dana Barros had 13 points and eight assists off the bench for Boston, which split the season series, 2-2.

"I don't think he played well tonight, and you know who he is -- Antoine Walker," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "You can say he had 43 points, but I wasn't happy with his defense tonight and it wasn't just him. It was that way with our whole team. If we don't play defense, you can take that 43 points and throw it out the window."

"I understand what coach is talking about," Walker said. "I made some mental mistakes in the fourth quarter and that is what makes him upset. You can look at it a couple of ways. I score 43 points and I didn't play that well. Or, if I don't score 43 points, we're not even close."

The Nets outrebounded the Celtics, 39-32. New Jersey also outshot Boston from the field, 54 percent (40-for-74) to 51 percent (44-for-86).

After a jumper by Walker gave Boston a 40-39 lead with 5:39 remaining in the first half, the Nets scored the next six points to take the lead for good.

David Vaughn started off the spurt with a layup. Chris Gatling, who had 15 points off the bench, added another layup, and Cassell finished it off with two free throws at 4:25, giving the Nets a 45-40 lead.

New Jersey extended a 59-52 halftime lead to 74-60 after Cassell sank a jumper at the 7:52 mark of the third quarter. Boston battled back with an 11-2 run later in the quarter, capped off by a three-pointer from Walker, to cut New Jersey's lead to 79-75 at 2:53.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Walker scored nine points during an 11-5 burst for Boston to cut the deficit to 97-93. But the Nets scored six straight points to regain control, with two layups by Gatling and two free throws by Cassell with 3:53 left, pushing the Nets' lead back to double digits, 103-93.
