Game Recap

Brian Grant had 25 points and 13 rebounds and sparked a pivotal fourth-quarter burst as the Portland Trail Blazers posted their seventh straight victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, 99-95.

With the Clippers ahead, 87-81, Grant hit two free throws with 4:44 to go, igniting an 18-8 run that closed the contest. Isaiah Rider also had 25 points and Rasheed Wallace added 23 and nine rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who have won 14 of the last 16 meetings in the series.

"We came out strong and our stars executed well," said Trail Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy. "We came up with better rebound opportunities, we hit our free throws and did the little things that were necessary to get us out ahead."

"Our main goal is getting healthier and making a strong run going into the playoffs," said Rider.

Lamond Murray and James Robinson had 20 points apiece for the Clippers, who have dropped six straight overall and 19 in a row to teams with winning records.

"We got to do the same thing at the finishes as when we are making a good run. The guys did the best that they could do."

After Grant's free throws cut the Portland deficit to 87-83, Rider hit a six-footer. Maurice Taylor made a free throw for Los Angeles but Wallace buried a seven-footer to draw the Trail Blazers within 88-87 with 3:19 left.

After a turnover by the Clippers, Wallace was credited with a basket following a goaltending call on Taylor. The basket gave the Trail Blazers a one-point lead with 2:25 to go. After another turnover, Wallace sank an 11-footer to push the Portland lead to 91-88.

Rodney Rogers hit two free throws for Los Angeles with 1:45 to play but Stacey Augmon countered with two free throws of his own. Taylor then fouled out and Grant sank both free throws for a 95-90 advantage with 69 seconds remaining.

Robinson had a steal and dunk for the Clippers with 40 seconds left but Rider countered with two from the line to restore a five-point advantage.

Damon Stoudamire had 10 points, eight assists and four steals for Portland, which won despite making just 2-of-9 three-point attempts and committing 17 turnovers. The Trail Blazers did hold a 44-37 edge on the boards and made nine more free throws.

"Damon is a big floor leader," added Rider. "He dictates the flow of the game, and for us, that is exactly what we needed."

"They made 81.8 percent of 33 free throws and we only made 64.3 percent of 26 free throws," said Clippers coach Bill Fitch. "That's going to get you beat in any close game."

Portland was without Arvydas Sabonis, who is out with a bruised right hip, while the Clippers were without their starting center, Isaac Austin, who missed the contest with a strained right calf.
