Game Recap

The Utah Jazz kept rolling even without suspended All-Star forward Karl Malone as they cruised to a 126-109 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers to move into a tie for the league's best record.

Malone, the reigning MVP, was suspended one game by the league for delivering an elbow to the head of San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson on Wednesday. Malone, the NBA's third-leading scorer, also was fined $5,000, while Robinson sat out tonight's 99-84 victory over Seattle due to a concussion and twisted left knee he suffered from that incident.

"Obviously I'm going to tell you I don't agree with any of that any time it happens," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said of the suspension. "But that's what happens in this league, you have to go ahead and play the game regardless of who's there. If they make that decision, what can I do about it."

Chris Morris, who was averaging just 3.8 points, made his first start of the season in place of Malone and finished with 16 points, four shy of his season high.

"For the first time since I've been here, Karl wasn't in the starting lineup," Jazz guard Jeff Hornacek said. "It felt kind of funny, but I think Chris (Morris) was up to the task. He is a good ball player and we said all along the best trade we made all year was the one that got him and Greg (Foster) back."

Hornacek scored 23 points and Howard Eisley added a career-high 22 as the Jazz matched the Chicago Bulls, who defeated Utah to win the title last season, for the best record in the league at 59-18. The Jazz, who won both games from Chicago this season, have won six in a row and are 27-3 since the All-Star break.

Maurice Taylor scored 22 points to pace the Clippers, who have dropped seven consecutive games and 20 in a row to teams with winning records. Los Angeles fell to 0-14 all-time at the Delta Center and has lost 18 straight trips to Utah since April 18th, 1989.

Foster added 13 points and 10 rebounds and was one of seven Jazz players in double figures. Utah committed just nine turnovers, owned a 43-27 edge on the boards and shot 55 percent (47-of-86) from the field in posting its third-highest point total of the season.

The Jazz moved 1 1/2 games in front of Seattle, which lost in San Antonio, for the top spot in the Western Conference. With a win Saturday at Minnesota, Utah can record its second straight 60-win campaign and third in the last four seasons.

Malone will be back for Saturday's contest after having his consecutive games streak snapped at 543. The last time the 11-time All-Star missed a game was for a similar reason. He was suspended for one game after elbowing Detroit Pistons guard Isiah Thomas on December 14th, 1991.

"When you see a guy like Karl Malone out, you think you can come in here and sneak a win," Taylor explained. "But they wouldn't be a great team if they just relied on him. ... They really filled Karl's shoes tonight."

Utah opened the game with an 8-2 spurt and took a 32-24 lead after one quarter. Hornacek had eight points in that period and 10 more in the third, when the Jazz turned a 13-point halftime lead into a 93-74 advantage heading into the fourth.

"Neither team was playing real solid until right there at the end of the third quarter, when the margin got out of hand," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "I'm very disappointed in the defense we played."

Hornacek had eight rebounds and six assists and shot 10-of-17 from the field. He and Eisley stepped up for an ineffective John Stockton, Malone's former Dream Team teammate, who finished with nine points and four assists. Eisley led a 54-point effort from the bench, which also received 12 points from Bryon Russell and 11 from Greg Ostertag.

"Any time you have to play without your superstar you look for someone else to step up," Eisley said. "Horny (Hornacek) was able to fill those shoes early in the game and that set the stage for me to step in and do some clean-up duty."

Lamond Murray scored 19 points, Charles Smith added 16 and Rodney Rogers 15 for the Clippers, who never led and suffered their sixth straight road loss. Los Angeles made 23-of-26 from the foul line but was outscored 58-24 in the paint and committed 18 turnovers.

Clippers reserve center Stojko Vrankovic did not score and fouled out in just 15 minutes. Starting guard James Robinson was ejected in the third quarter for arguing with officials.
