Game Recap

Stephon Marbury scored 11 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter as the Minnesota Timberwolves clinched the first winning record in franchise history with a 110-103 victory over the Utah Jazz, who relinquished the NBA's best record.

Kevin Garnett added nine of his 22 points in the final period for the Timberwolves (42-36), who turned back two late rallies by the Jazz and won their fourth straight game. Minnesota shot 11-of-15 from three-point range.

Matched up against John Stockton, Marbury also handed out 10 assists as he capped a spectacular weekend. On Friday, he had 26 points and 16 assists against Philadelphia's Allen Iverson.

"Steph did a lot better job defensively against Stockton tonight," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "When things got a little bit hairy down the stretch, we didn;'t lose our poise."

"This is definitely the time for us to peak," Marbury said. "The guys are just playing hard. We're not playing with talent, we're playing with heart and desire. My shoulder's getting back up to par, I got my legs back, and my timing. ... Everything's clicking."

Karl Malone returned from a one-game suspension -- the first game he has missed in 6 1/2 years -- to collect 37 points and 12 rebounds for the Jazz, who lost for just the fourth time in 31 games since the All-Star break.

But Utah (59-19) fell one game behind the Chicago Bulls (60-18) in the race for the league's best record and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs. Last year, the Bulls held homecourt advantage and beat the Jazz in six games in the NBA Finals.

"We didn't come to play basketball tonight," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "Minnesota did a terrific job and they deserve to win. They outplayed us. They wanted to win more than we did.

"We were looking for an edge. We were worried about what other teams were doing and not concentrating on the right thing. When you don't have good concentration, you get knocked around."

Utah trailed by three points entering the fourth quarter before Malone made a jumper, cutting the deficit to 78-77. Marbury answered with a three-point play, rebuilding the lead to 81-77 with 10:36 left.

Another jumper from Malone pulled the Jazz within 83-82 with 9:33 remaining, but Terry Porter sank two free throws and Marbury had a layup to boost the lead to five points with 8:30 left. Porter scored 21 points off the bench.

Utah made one last surge, closing to 93-91 on two free throws by Adam Keefe with 4:51 to play. But Sam Mitchell made a layup and jumper to give Minnesota a 97-91 advantage with 3:46 remaining. Malone made two free throws, but Porter hit a jumper, Garnett had a three-point play off a dunk and Marbury sealed the win at 104-93 with a layup with 2:31 left.

"Our guys are creating a lot of enthusiasm," Saunders said. "We're shooting the ball well and we're playing with a lot of confidence. Steph's doing a great job of running things. Garnett's been huge. ... Mitchell, Terry Porter, we've had different people that have stepped up."

Anthony Peeler scored 17 points and Mitchell added 14 for the Wolves, who shot 51 percent (40-of-78) from the field. Garnett had nine rebounds and seven assists and Cherokee Parks also pulled down nine boards.

Keefe had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Stockton added 16 points but just four assists for the Jazz, who also shot 51 percent (39-of-76) but were just 2-of-7 from behind the arc. Utah held a 41-35 rebounding edge but also committed an uncharacteristic 20 turnovers, leading to 26 Minnesota points.

"They didn't play bad tonight," Saunders said. "They shot 51 percent, they beat us on the boards and they had 31 assists. The big key was that they had 20 turnovers."

Coming off just the fifth missed game in his 12-year career, Malone shot 15-of-25 from the field. On Friday, he saw his consecutive games streak end at 543 when he was suspended for elbowing San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson on Wednesday. He had not missed a game since December 17th, 1991, when he also was suspended.

"It's pretty simple," Malone said. "We know what we have to do and we didn't do it. Give Minnesota credit, but we didn;t do what we should have.'

Utah led just once, at 13-11 midway through the first quarter. Anthony Peeler scored nine points in the period, which ended with Minnesota holding a 30-26 lead. Mitchell scored eight points in the second period as the Wolves built their lead to 57-50 at halftime.

"I just try to get the team going, no matter what," Peeler said. "KG or Steph usually get us going, but I just had the hot hand tonight. Terry told me to come out and just try to get it going early and set the tempo for everyone else."

The Jazz pulled into a 60-60 tie before Garnett buried a short jumper to trigger an 8-0 run. Marbury made a 19-footer and a layup before Garnett dunked for a 68-60 lead with 6:39 to play in the third quarter. Malone's 12 points in the period helped Utah cut the deficit to 78-75 entering the final 12 minutes.
