Game Recap

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored a season-high 31 points, including two key baskets in overtime, to lead the Vancouver Grizzlies to a 105-96 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Abdur-Rahim was 15-of-30 from the field, setting a club record for shot attempts, as he reached his season high for the fourth time. The Grizzlies had lost the previous three games in which Abdur-Rahim scored 31 points.

Blue Edwards scored 27 points and Tony Massenburg added 22, both season highs, for the Grizzlies, who had lost seven of their last eight but improved to 3-2 in overtime games this season. Vancouver (18-59) already has established a franchise mark for wins.

Isaiah Rider scored 26 points and Rasheed Wallace added 22 and 16 rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who allowed 20 points in the extra session after permitting just 16 in the fourth quarter.

Vancouver starting center Bryant Reeves and Portland pivotman Arvydas Sabonis both missed the game with injuries. Reeves has a bruised knee and Sabonis has a sore hip.

"It was definitely one of the biggest highlights of the season because it was a game that we weren't expected to win," said Massenburg. "Without Country (Reeves), we definitely wouldn't have been favored. To win without him is just amazing."

"Everybody just stepped up today with the big fellow out," said Abdur-Rahim. "Tony Massenburg was huge. He played so big and picked up a lot of the load."

Edwards and Lee Mayberry scored five points each in overtime. Vancouver took the lead for good at 92-90 with 2:58 remaining on a dunk by Massenburg, who taunted afterwards and was ejected with his second technical foul.

Rider made the technical foul shot, but Abdur-Rahim answered with a runner with 2:10 to go. Vancouver's Michael Smith made a layup and Abdur-Rahim added another layup for a 98-91 advantage with 56 seconds left. It was at least a two-possession game thereafter.

"I think they played strong inside," Rider said. "Massenburg especially played very, very strong and Shareef hit a lot of good jump shots. They played great together in Bryant's absence."

The Blazers trailed 69-61 entering the fourth quarter, but Rider and Walt Williams scored four points apiece in an 11-2 run that opened the period and gave Portland a 72-71 edge with 7:32 left.

Two free throws by Edwards gave Vancouver an 85-83 lead with 1:44 to go, but Jermaine O'Neal tied it with a layup 38 seconds later. The Grizzlies missed two shots, and the Blazers had a turnover and a missed three-pointer by Damon Stoudamire, sending the game to overtime.

Mayberry had 11 points and 10 assists and Smith had 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot 41 percent (38-of-92) from the field, including 6-of-11 from three-point range, and committed just 13 turnovers.

"Blue and Lee played incredible and Michael Smith played like an animal," Abdur-Rahim said. "It was beautiful."

Brian Grant had 11 points and nine rebounds and Stoudamire added 10 points and nine assists for the Blazers, who shot 49 percent (38-of-77) and held a 47-41 rebounding edge. But Portland had 25 turnovers leading to 32 points for Vancouver.

"We were just trying to make the extra pass," lamented Wallace.

Massenburg scored 17 points in the first half, but the Grizzlies trailed 46-45 at halftime. Abdur-Rahim scored 11 third-quarter points, helping Vancouver build an eight-point lead.

"I'm disappointed in the way we started the game from the standpoint of the offensive boards and turnovers and it plagued us most of the night," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Their team played hard and got a lot of good performances. Massenburg came in as a starter and had a great game and we didn't match that. That was the difference."
