Game Recap

Anthony Mason had a season-high 29 points and 14 rebounds and B.J. Armstrong sank the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:02 left as the Charlotte Hornets held on to fourth place in the Eastern Conference with an 88-86 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Bobby Phills scored 14 points and slumping Glen Rice added 13 for the Hornets (48-30), who snapped a season-high four-game losing streak and finished 3-1 against the reeling Pistons.

The Hornets held the Pistons scoreless for the final 2:10 and overcame a league-leading fourth triple-double by Grant Hill to stay a game ahead of the fifth-place Atlanta Hawks in the East. The Hawks (47-31), who downed Washington, hold the tiebreaker edge over Charlotte.

Hill had 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for the Pistons (35-44), who fell into 13th place in the 15-team East. Detroit dropped to 12-28 on the road after going 54-28 overall last season.

A layup by Hill gave the Pistons an 86-82 lead with 2:10 to go, but that was Detroit's final points. Mason dunked 22 seconds later and Armstrong's three-pointer gave Charlotte the lead for good.

Joe Dumars and Jerry Stackhouse missed three-pointers and Don Reid missed a bank shot before Mason grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 6.9 seconds left. He made 1-of-2 to extend the lead to two points.

Hill tried a pass to the right corner, but Donald Royal, playing for the first time in the game as a defensive replacement, stole the ball. With his momentum carrying him out of bounds, Royal threw the ball over his head. Hill tracked it down at the right wing but his three-pointer as time expired barely glanced the rim.

Vlade Divac had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Armstrong scored nine points off the bench for the Hornets, who shot 41.5 percent (34-of-82) from the field and held a 46-44 rebounding advantage.

Mason made 11-of-17 shots, but Rice, who averages 22.2 points per game, was 6-of-13 and is shooting just 42 percent (27-of-64) over his last five games, reaching 20 points just once.

Dumars scored 20 points and Stackhouse added 12 for the Pistons, who shot 43 percent (34-of-79) but made just 12-of-20 from the line. Center Brian Williams, who averages 16.4 points per game, was held to eight.

A jumper by Dumars gave Detroit a 51-45 lead with 8:08 left in the third quarter, but Charlotte responded with an 11-0 run as five different players scored. Mason's jumper capped the burst and gave the Hornets a 56-51 advantage with 4:44 remaining in the period.

The Hornets held a 66-62 lead after three quarters, but a tip-in by Hill completed a 9-4 spurt and gave the Pistons a 71-70 lead with 9:10 to go.

Neither team led by more than five points in the first half, which ended with Detroit holding a 43-39 lead. Mason kept the Hornets close with 12 points.
