Game Recap

Reserve Eldridge Recasner scored 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and the Atlanta Hawks held the rudderless Washington Wizards without a point over the final four minutes of a 91-81 victory.

Atlanta trailed by nine points after three quarters, but Recasner led the fourth-quarter charge that saw the Hawks hold Washington to 10 points while scoring the final 10 of the game.

Recasner stroked a jumper, then made 1-of-2 free throws with just under five minutes left, giving Atlanta an 81-79 lead. After Washington's Calbert Cheaney converted a baseline drive with 4:03 to go, Mookie Blaylock hit consecutive jumpers to ignite the game-ending burst.

Chris Webber netted 19 points and Juwan Howard added 16 but the Wizards -- who again were without injured star point guard Rod Strickland -- dropped their third straight game. Washington blew a 14-point second-quarter lead.

Chris Whitney started for Strickland and collected 10 points and eight assists, but also had seven turnovers and appeared to run out of gas down the stretch as the Wizards (38-40) were pushed closer to playoff elimination.

Steve Smith scored 18 points and Alan Henderson added 17 for Atlanta, which remained a game behind fourth-place Charlotte in the East with its third win in four games.

Dikembe Mutombo was held to five points but pulled down 14 rebounds for the Hawks, who held a slim 45-42 edge on the boards but took a huge advantage at the free-throw line, hitting 26-of-34 to overshadow the Wizards' 6-of-10 effort.

Blaylock had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Tyrone Corbin added 12 points as Atlanta hit 44 percent (30-of-68) from the field.

Webber's lay-in gave the Wizards a 58-44 lead with 6 1/2 minutes to go in the third quarter before Atlanta fought back and sliced the margin to 71-62 entering the final period.

The Hawks, who weathered an 18-point second quarter, put things together in the fourth quarter and took an 83-81 edge on a jumper by Blaylock with 2:38 remaining.

Atlanta pulled away as Blaylock sank his second bucket and a free throw around teammate Christian Laettner's foul shot. Smith followed with a pair of free throws and a layup with 22 seconds left that provided the final margin.

Howard had 14 points and Webber 11 as the Wizards took a 51-38 halftime lead. But Washington missed 5-of-20 three-pointers while shooting 43 percent (35-of-82) overall.
