Game Recap

George McCloud scored 23 points and Antonio McDyess added 22 and nine rebounds as the Phoenix Suns extended their winning streak to nine games and ended a five-game road trip with a 105-97 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

The Suns, who own the league's longest current winning streak, used a 17-4 burst in the third quarter to take control. McCloud snapped a 57-57 tie with a three-pointer before McDyess scored eight points and Cliff Robinson had six of his 21 to open a 74-61 lead with three minutes remaining.

"We're not worried about San Antonio right now, we're in an ideal situation, we control our own destiny," Robinson said.

Jason Kidd narrowly missed a triple-double with 16 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds as Phoenix moved a full game in front of fifth-place Spurs in the Western Conference.

"This road trip leaves us in great shape," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "We don't have to rely on anybody else to do us any favors."

Jason Caffey netted a career-high 28 points and 12 rebounds and Tony Delk scored 21 points for the Warriors (16-63), who suffered their fifth straight loss and assured themselves of their worst single-season record since going 17-63 in 1964-65, when they were based in San Francisco.

"When I was coming off the bench I was putting too much pressure on myself to make everything perfect," Caffey said. "Now I feel P.J. (coach Carlesimo) is giving me a chance to sink into a role and I'm feeling more and more comfortable each game."

Phoenix's Rex Chapman left in the second quarter with seven points after aggravating a sore left hamstring. He will sit out Wednesday's meeting with Denver.

McDyess was 9-of-16 from the field and McCloud hit 8-of-13 as the Suns made 44 percent (34-of-78) of their shots and 30-of-35 free-throw attempts.

Phoenix got off to a slow start as the Warriors scored the game's first eight points while building a 25-11 lead. The Suns closed quickly, reeling off the last 10 points of the quarter in under three minutes to pull within 25-21.

Caffey had 15 points and Clarence Weatherspoon 12 as the Warriors fell into a 51-51 tie at the break. Jim Jackson's bucket gave Golden State its last lead, 54-53, but the Suns scored 20 of the next 27 points to pull away.

The Warriors answered, cutting it to 74-72 on two free throws by Jackson with a second left in the third, capping an 11-0 burst.

But Phoenix reserve Dennis Scott sank a runner, McDyess had a layup and Kevin Johnson hit a free throw to widen the margin. Johnson, who had nine points off the bench, added a jumper with 9:35 remaining that made it 83-74.

Delk's three-pointer cut it to 100-94 with 47 seconds to play but the Warriors were unable to climb closer.

Jackson totaled 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists and Weatherspoon had 16 for the Warriors, who shot 43 percent (37-of-85).
