Game Recap

Shawn Kemp scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and the Cleveland Cavaliers remained on their torrid pace with their 13th win in 16 games, a 95-86 victory over the Boston Celtics.

The Cavaliers (46-33) clinched sixth place in the Eastern Conference, which means they do not have to face a division winner in the first round. They are two games behind the Atlanta Hawks (48-31) for the fifth spot.

Derek Anderson scored 15 points off the bench and Zydrunas Ilgauskas 12 for Cleveland, which also has won 12 of its last 14 home games and eight of its last nine meetings with the Celtics.

"We had a real good performance by the group coming off the bench tonight to come out and salvage the win," Cleveland coach Mike Fratello said. "As it has happened all year with Boston, they played their hearts out. They drive you crazy with their hustle and effort. They make so much happen with second effort."

Antoine Walker had 31 points and 14 rebounds and Ron Mercer added 22 to lead Boston (35-44), which still needs one win to reach its highest victory total since going 48-34 in the 1992-93 season.

"In the first half we played good defense and made them turn the ball over," Walker said. "In the second half the Cavs were aggressive and shot well. They picked it up on their defensive intensity and were real active with their hands."

Boston scored 22 points off 24 Cleveland turnovers, but the Cavs outshot the Celtics from the field, 52 percent (30-for-58) to 40 percent (36-for-91). The Celtics also misfired on 10-of-13 three-point attempts.

"I think if we could've handled the basketball in the first half and not turned it over, we could've been up 10 or 12 points," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "But when you have a lot of turnovers and are forcing a lot of turnovers, with the way we shoot the basketball, it's not going to bode well for us."

Cleveland was up 46-38 at the half as Kemp contributed 12 points. But Boston used an 11-2 spurt midway through the third quarter to climb back into the game.

After a basket by Kemp gave the Cavs a 58-50 advantage, Greg Minor opened Boston's run with a layup. A hook shot by Walker with 2:56 left capped the spurt and gave Boston a 61-60 lead, its first since the first half.

On the Cavs' next possession, Danny Ferry -- who had 11 points off the bench -- hit a three-pointer to make it 63-6. Walker hit a pair of free throws to pull the Celtics into their last tie. Vitaly Potapenko's two free throws at the 2:07 mark gave Cleveland the lead for good at 65-63.

A jumper by Minor 25 seconds into the fourth quarter drew the Celtics within 69-68, but Ferry answered with another three-pointer and Anderson followed with a three-point play off a drive to help the Cavs extend their lead to 75-68.

"I think we made better decisions in the second half," Anderson said. "We were rushing every time they came at us and that was forcing us to do things that we were not used to doing. Once we slowed down the game, we went to Shawn Kemp and started passing the ball better. We got easy baskets and that broke them down.

"Clinching the sixth seed is something for us to be proud of. Now we can play hard the rest of the way so we can go into the playoffs with momentum."

Mercer's three-point play with 10 minutes left cut the deficit to 75-73, but Cleveland put together a 15-7 spurt to regain control. Anderson contributed five points to the burst, Kemp four and Wesley Person capped it with a three-pointer at 5:14 to make it 90-80. Boston got no closer than eight points thereafter.

Cleveland's Bob Sura took an inadvertent elbow to the head in the fourth quarter and left the game with a concussion. He was cleared by doctors to return home for the night but will not travel with the team for Wednesday's game at Washington.
