Game Recap

Glen Rice scored 30 points and the Charlotte Hornets shot 73 percent from the field in the second quarter to snap a five-game road losing streak with a 104-82 rout of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Trailing by three at the end of the first quarter, the Hornets outscored the Bucks 36-18 in the second quarter to gain the lead for good. Charlotte connected on 16-of-23 shots in the period while holding the Milwaukee to just 31 percent (5-of-16).

Charlotte (49-30) maintained its hold on fourth place in the Eastern Conference -- and homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Hornets are one game ahead of Atlanta (48-31) and visits the Hawks on Friday.

"This was simply a great game for us to win," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said. "We were cold in the beginning but our guys did it. We executed well on offense and we contested on defense. You can't worry about losing, you just have to figure out how to win. It's the same challenge every game."

Anthony Mason chipped in with 18 points and seven rebounds and David Wesley added 15 and seven assists for Charlotte, which has rebounded from a season-high four-game losing streak with two straight wins.

"Any time we can play unselfish ball, it's wonderful," said Mason. "Our team is always improving and helping one another out. We're making a statement that the Hornets are here to win."

Ervin Johnson and Armon Gilliam each scored 16 points and Johnson added 17 rebounds for Milwaukee, which had won five of its previous seven overall but has lost three of its last four at home.

Although the Bucks held a 46-35 rebounding edge, they shot just 37 percent (31-for-83) from the field, including 1-of-13 from three-point range. Milwaukee's backcourt struggled, Ray Allen hitting just 2-of-16 shots and Terrell Brandon 3-of-12.

"We got off to a good start, especially with Ervin Johnson, who's been playing consistently all month," Milwaukee coach Chris Ford said. "However, we didn't shoot well. I wish I could have everyone healthy. But our guys have given me everything they have. I'm proud of the way they've handled themselves."

Charlotte connected on 53 percent (42-for-79) of its shots and turned 18 Milwaukee turnovers into 24 points. Rice hit 10-of-17 shots, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc.

Milwaukee started quickly, jumping out to leads of 8-0 and 18-8, but the Hornets scored the last six points of the first quarter to cut the deficit to 24-21.

Charlotte then scored the first eight points of the second quarter to stretch the run to 14-0, with Dell Curry and J.R. Reid each contributing two baskets to help the Hornets move ahead for good, 29-24.

The Hornets' biggest lead of the first half was 57-42 on Wesley's three-pointer at the second-quarter buzzer.

When Bobby Phills made a layup 90 seconds into the third quarter, it increased Charlotte's lead to 62-42 and finished off a stretch in which Charlotte scored 44 of 62 points.

Milwaukee got within 82-67 early in the fourth quarter on a basket by Gilliam, but the Hornets rebuilt their lead to 97-71 on a jumper by B.J. Armstrong with just over four minutes remaining.

"We just didn't have it tonight," Brandon said. "We needed something after we went on our small runs, but they always seemed to counter with a run of their own."
