Game Recap

Rik Smits scored six points in an 18-2 run that opened the fourth quarter as the Indiana Pacers clinched the second-best record in the Eastern Conference by rallying for an 82-70 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Reggie Miller scored 22 points and Antonio Davis and Jalen Rose added 13 apiece for the Pacers (57-23), who are two games ahead of the Miami Heat (55-25) with two games to play. Indiana owns the tiebreaker and will have homecourt advantage should the teams meet in the conference semifinals. The Pacers will face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round.

"We are fine-tuning, checking oil, tires and etc.," Miller said. "And we are verry happy with the results. We must ccontinue to play at this level and we definitely need Rik back to win a championship."

Smits, who returned Monday after missing most of the month with sore feet, was 2-of-11 from the field through the first three quarters but sparked the Pacers by making the first two baskets of the final period to trigger the run. Indiana held Atlanta without a basket for more than 10 minutes of the second half.

"It was a good second half," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "We got off to a strange start. The second half we just played excellent defense. I think in the playoffs, anytime you get homecourt advantage, you have to use it to your advantage."

Steve Smith scored 17 points and Alan Henderson added 15 and 11 rebounds for the Hawks, who will face the Charlotte Hornets in the first round. Atlanta (48-32) is two games behind Charlotte with two games to play, but owns the tiebreaker edge and would gain homecourt advantage in the first round if it can catch the Hornets. The teams meet Friday in Atlanta.

The Hawks led 42-32 at halftime and still held a 58-50 bulge after a jumper by Smith with 2:28 left in the third quarter. But Atlanta did not score another basket for the next 10:23.

"You can't get down against a team like this," Smith said. "Sometimes when we play Indiana, we give the game away. This one, we just lost. This team (Pacers) is very strong."

Smits made a jumper and Derrick McKey added a layup as Indiana closed to 60-54 after three quarters. Smits began the final period with a pair of jumpers and the Pacers finally grabbed the lead at 64-62 on a three-point play by Rose with 7:25 to go.

Miller added two free throws and Smits hit another jumper before baskets by Rose and McKey capped the burst at 72-62 with 4:28 remaining.

Tyrone Corbin's jumper with 4:05 left ended Atlanta's field-goal drought and Smith made a jumper 14 seconds later. But Rose made a three-pointer in an 8-0 burst, and Mark Jackson's short hook gave Indiana its largest lead at 80-66 with 1:32 to play.

"This was definitely a game of spurts," Miller said. "We did the little things at the end of the game to win."

The Pacers shot 64 percent (11-of-17) from the field in the final period while holding the Hawks to 27 percent (4-of-15). Atlanta had seven turnovers and no assists in the period.

Smits shot 5-of-17 from the field but scored 10 points for the Pacers, who shot 45.5 percent (35-of-77) and committed just 10 turnovers. Dale Davis grabbed 13 rebounds and Jackson had 12 assists.

"The Pacers are playing a lot better than last year," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "I think the key was getting Mark Jackson back and keeping Jalen Rose and letting him develop. They have a lot of depth now."

Dikembe Mutombo had 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Hawks, who shot 37.5 percent (30-of-80), including 1-of-12 from three-point range. Atlanta held a 49-37 rebounding advantage but committed 18 turnovers.

The Hawks led 20-19 after one quarter and took advantage of an awful second period by the Pacers. Indiana shot 29 percent (5-of-17) and scored just 13 points. Henderson scored the last four points in a 10-2 run that closed the first half and gave Atlanta a 42-32 lead.
