Game Recap

Nick Anderson scored 15 of his 24 points in the first half and the Orlando Magic used a key third-quarter spurt to defeat the Miami Heat for the first time in four games this season, 99-87.

Although the Magic (40-40) are tied with the Washington Wizards for ninth place in the Eastern Conference, they are eliminated from the playoffs for the first time since 1993.

"Well, we've got a lot of older guys and they are very professional and I wouldn't have expected anything different from them as far as effort," Orlando coach Chuck Daly said. "They feel very strongly that they want to play hard the rest of the season, which I thought we did tonight. I think Miami might have been a little off tonight. It might have been one of those games for them."

The loss was a costly one for the Heat (55-25), relegating them to third place in the East behind the Indiana Pacers. Although the Heat already had clinched the East's second seed by winning the Atlantic Division, they would not have homecourt advantage if they faced the third-seeded Pacers in the second round.

Miami had won the first three meetings this season between the teams and was going for the season sweep. Neither of these Atlantic Division intrastate rivals had beaten the other four times in one season.

Horace Grant had 17 points and nine rebounds and Derek Strong 15 and nine off the bench for Orlando, which ended a four-game losing streak against the Heat as well as a four-game road losing streak. Anderson also had four steals.

"We played team defense and we made our shots," Grant said. "That was the difference. Beating Miami is not as gratifying as making the playoffs, but it eases the ride home to Orlando."

Tim Hardaway had 22 points and 11 assists and Alonzo Mourning scored 18 points for the Heat, who have lost three of their last five games. Dan Majerle chipped in with four three-pointers and 14 points and P.J. Brown 11 rebounds.

Miami outrebounded the Magic 39-35, but was outshot from the field, 47 percent (35-for-47) to 41 percent (29-for-70). The Heat were 7-for-20 from three-point range while the Magic were just 1-for-11 from behind the arc.

Orlando's bench outscored Miami's, 48-14, with Mark Price adding 15 points and six assists and rookie Johnny Taylor scoring 10 points.

"I thought we had a horrible second half and we got caught at the end of the third quarter," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "They just outplayed us, kept moving the ball and kept making shots. You can't use any excuses at this time of the season. You have to play.

"How are we going? We are not playing well. It's a concern of mine but we hope that we can get it back. We have to raise our level of play over the last two games."

After Hardaway made one of two free throws to tie it 67-67 with 5:42 remaining in the third quarter, Orlando used an 11-3 burst to take the lead for good. Anderson started it with a layup with 3:55 left and Grant capped it with a free throw with 42 seconds left in the quarter, moving the Magic to a 78-70 advantage.

The third quarter ended with Orlando holding a 78-72 lead despite making just 6-of-20 shots in the quarter. The Heat were 5-of-20 from the field.

Orlando's lead grew to 87-76 with 7:02 remaining when Price hit a jumper. Miami pulled within 89-82 after Majerle hit his second consecutive three-pointer, but a basket by Price and consecutive jumpers by Grant gave Orlando its biggest lead of the quarter, 95-82, with just under four minutes left.

"We haven't been playing well and it's showing. We can't let this wound continue to bleed," Mourning said. "We have to get right fast. It's going to take work. Everybody needs to know their roles and do their job. We can't go far in the playoffs if we play defense this way. Orlando won in the effort department tonight."
