Game RecapAlan Henderson scored 15 of his 25 points in the opening half as the Atlanta Hawks built a 28-point halftime lead and kept alive hopes for homecourt advantage in first round of the playoffs with a 121-104 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.
Atlanta, which will face Charlotte in the first round, won all four meetings this season by double digits this season and moved within one game of fourth-place Charlotte with one game to play.
The Hawks (49-32) finish the regular season Sunday at home against Miami, while Charlotte (50-31) closes the season at home Sunday against Orlando. By virtue of their season series sweep, the Hawks would gain homecourt in the first round if the teams finished tied.
"We've got to figure them (Atlanta) out and we've got three or four days to do that," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said. "Right now, Orlando is the key because obviously homecourt advantage is going to be really big for us."
The Hornets, who defeated every team in the league this season except Atlanta, were led by Glen Rice's 30 points.
Atlanta wasted no time in taking control from the start, opening the game on an 18-6 spurt, capped by a three-pointer by Mookie Blaylock with 7:54 to go.
Blaylock, who finished with 20 points, connected on 4-of-4 three-pointers in the opening quarter as the Hawks scored a season-high points in a quarter and held a 41-20 lead. Blaylock scored 12 of his points in the first period.
"I thought we came out very aggressive, very determined early in the game," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We went right at them, moved the ball and our defense was excellent. I thought we played extremely well."
The Hawks pushed the lead to 71-43 at intermission behind 15 points from Henderson and 14 by Blaylock. Atlanta's 71 points in the first half also was a season high. Steve Smith, who led the Hawks with 27 points, scored 13 in the opening half.
"We wanted to come out and get off to a good start and carry the momentum into the playoffs next week," Henderson said. "We didn't want them to think they could handle us. We wanted to finish the season sweeping the series and we did it. Homecourt advantage really doesn't matter to us."
Smith sank 10-of-19 shots from the floor for the Hawks, who shot 54 percent (47-of-87) overall and held a huge 51-24 rebounding edge, including a 22-9 edge on the offensive boards.
"They really beat us in every facet of the game," Cowens said. "They got off to a big start. I think there are times that teams are going to shoot really well. But what really hurt us and put us down was their offensive rebounding."
Charlotte started the second half by scoring 16 of the first 19 points to draw within 74-59 with 8:03 left in the third quarter. David Wesley scored six points of his 18 points in that burst.
But Atlanta answered by scoring seven straight points to reclaim a 20-point lead. The Hawks took a 99-75 lead into the final quarter.
Rice hit 11-of-19 shots for the Hornets, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Charlotte shot 50 percent (41-of-82).
