Game Recap

Shaquille O'Neal scored 12 of his 43 points in the first quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers took an early lead and cruised to a 124-95 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, pulling even with the Seattle SuperSonics atop the Pacific Division.

The Lakers' (60-21) win combined with Seattle's loss to San Antonio earlier tonight gives the teams identical records with one game to play. But since the Sonics won the season series with Los Angeles, 3-1, they would have to lose at Portland Sunday while the Lakers must beat Utah at home to win the division.

Los Angeles, which has taken two of three meetings from the Jazz this season, has won two in a row against Utah at the Great Western Forum.

"Tonight I got a chance to showcase some of my stuff a little bit," O'Neal said. "Luckily my shots were falling so I went to them."

O'Neal shot 18-of-22 from the field and 7-of-13 from the free-throw line, breaking the 40-point mark for the third time this season. Eddie Jones added 21 points and Kobe Bryant totaled 17 as Los Angeles won its fourth straight game.

"We do not have an answer for Shaq (O'Neal)," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "They are a lot bigger and stronger up front. It is truly man against boys. They are the best team that we played."

Michael Finley scored 31 points and Hubert Davis netted 21 for Dallas, which suffered its fifth consecutive road loss and fell for the 10th time in 12 games overall.

The Lakers made 68 percent (13-of-19) of their shots in the opening quarter while Washington missed on 17-of-27 chances from the field.

Jones had seven points and O'Neal four as Los Angeles ran out to an 18-6 lead with a 11-2 burst.

"You have to be playing well toward the end of the season," Jones said. "If you are playing well, then you can have confidence in yourself. When you have great confidence in yourself during the playoffs, then you're winning games."

Traling 31-21 after one quarter, the Mavericks scored the first seven points of the second period and pulled within 31-28 on a 17-footer by Shawn Bradley with 10 1/2 minutes left. But Derek Fisher hit 1-of-2 free throws and Bryant drained an 11-footer as to end the threat as Los Angeles rebuilt its advantage to 56-46 at the break.

Fisher had just five points but dished out 10 assists in the absence of Nick Van Exel, who was suspended for his involvement in a fight in Tuesday's game with Dallas.

The Lakers shooting was even better in the third quarter as they built upon their lead. O'Neal poured in another 12 points while Los Angeles sank 71 percent (15-of-21) of their shots.

After Erick Strickland's short jumper cut it to 65-54 with 8:20 to go, Los Angeles expanded its lead with a 21-2 surge that was capped by Robert Horry's layup with 5:42 remaining. The Lakers held a double-digit lead thereafter.

Horry finished with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for Los Angeles, which shot a blistering 62 percent (47-of-76) from the floor and held a decisive 48-31 rebounding edge. Rick Fox added nine points, nine boards and three blocks as the Lakers rejected nine shots. O'Neal led with four blocks.

Strickland had 14 points and Shawn Bradley and Shawn Respert each added 10 for the Mavs, who shot 41 percent (47-of-76). Bradley fouled out after 28 minutes as he and starting center Eric Riley combined to commit 11 fouls and were outscored by O'Neal by 30 points.
