Game Story

INGLEWOOD, California (Ticker) -- The three All-Stars of the Los Angeles Lakers were much better than the three all-time greats of the Houston Rockets.

Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Eddie Jones outplayed Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon and Scottie Pippen as the Lakers held off the Rockets, 99-91, in the season opener for both teams.

Barkley, Olajuwon and Pippen all are among the NBA's 50 Greatest Players and form a formidable frontcourt for Houston. However, only Barkley had a big game with 31 points and 15 rebounds.

"The Lakers have been together a lot longer than we have," said Barkley. "Considering that we have only been together for a week, I was happy with our performance."

Olajuwon had 11 points and seven rebounds. He did not score in the second half and fouled out with 2:18 to play trying to guard O'Neal, who overpowered him for 30 points and 14 rebounds.

"He is too big," Olajuwon said. "I don't think that you can stop him. You can just make him work for every shot he takes."

Pippen teamed with Michael Jordan to lead the Chicago Bulls to six championships in eight years before being acquired by the Rockets. But the superstar struggled with 10 points on just 4-of-18 shooting as he was hounded by Bryant.

"I didn't shoot the ball very well and missed a lot of easy shots around the basket," Pippen said. "It was a game I deferred a lot to Charles and Hakeem. I was hesitant on my shot."

"The story I think probably had to be Kobe coming in, starting against Scottie Pippen and how's that gonna work out?" Lakers coach Del Harris said. "Nine out of 10 people are gonna give the edge to Houston on that one. Kobe established himself defensively early on and played under control the entire night. He just had a wonderful game on both ends of the court."

Last year, Bryant became the youngest All-Star starter at just 20 years old. Normally a sixth man, he got the start at small forward when Rick Fox was sidelined with a sore right foot and responded with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

"It was a pretty good start," Bryant said. "I have a lot of things that I'm mad at myself about, but it was a good start. It was a big challenge for us and we came out of here with a pretty big win."

Jones made just 2-of-12 shots but collected 11 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers, who beat the Rockets for the fourth time in five meetings.

Late in the third quarter, Barkley went to the line and was serenaded with an obscene chant. After each made free throw, he gave the crowd the "raise the roof" sign with his hands.

A 3-pointer by Matt Bullard gave Houston its last tie at 70-70 with 11:11 to play. But Los Angeles rattled off 11 of the next 12 points. Free agent signee Derek Harper and Bryant drilled 3-pointers around three points by Jones before O'Neal sank two free throws for an 81-71 advantage with 8:34 remaining.

The Rockets ended the run on their next possession, but O'Neal nearly pulled down the backboard with a follow dunk, rebuilding the lead to 10 points. A 3-pointer by Harper, who had 16 points and seven assists off the bench, gave Los Angeles its largest lead at 88-76 with 5:32 to go.

Barkley kept his team in it, scoring nine of Houston's final 11 points. But he was doing it by himself as Pippen could not get untracked and Olajuwon fouled out. The Rockets could get no closer than four points in the final minute.

The Lakers also were without forward Robert Horry, whose wife gave birth to a child in Houston. Los Angeles shot 45 percent (34-of-76) from the field, including 8-of-17 3-pointers, and held a 47-44 rebounding edge.

"We have a very deep basketball team, and anyone on this teamcan step up on a given night," Harper said. "That's what it's all about in this league. When people go down, you have to be prepared."

Rookie Michael Dickerson scored 12 points and Othella Harrington added 11 for the Rockets, who shot 41 percent (35-of-86), including 2-of-12 from behind the arc.

Pippen shot 1-of-10 in the first half but the Rockets emerged with a 45-43 lead behind 11 points apiece from Barkley, Olajuwon and Harrington. Bryant scored 12 for the Lakers.
