Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- After Joe Dumars jump-started the Detroit Pistons, Jerry Stackhouse came off the bench and buried the Miami Heat.

Dumars hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 of his 14 points in the first quarter and the Pistons never trailed en route to a 95-81 victory over the Heat in the season opener for both teams.

Stackhouse scored 24 points, including 16 in the second half. Pistons coach Alvin Gentry received 35 points and 23 rebounds from his bench as he beat the man who replaced him in Miami. Heat coach Pat Riley got a total of 13 points and seven rebounds from his reserves.

"We got off to a good start and were able to maintain," Gentry said. "Everybody from our starters to our bench did a great job for us."

Dumars hit a pair of 3-pointers to key a 7-0 run and give the Pistons a 13-6 early lead. Detroit increased the lead to eight points at the quarter and 14 by the half. Miami pulled no closer than eight points in the second half.

"Joe sparked us in the first half and gave us a cushion," Stackhouse said. "From then on, we kept up the pressure."

Grant Hill opened the game with a dunk to set the tone for Detroit and finished with 19 points. Lindsey Hunter added 15 for the Pistons.

"It was a total team effort and we're going to need it in a season where we're going to have play three games in three nights," Hill said. "It's important to get off to a good start."

Jamal Mashburn scored 19 points and Tim Hardaway added 18 for the Heat, who had won eight of the last nine meetings between the clubs. Alonzo Mourning had 14 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots.

"It was disappointing," Mashburn said. "They controlled the tempo and they controlled the game. With 49 games left, you can't be totally alarmed, but we have to nip it in the bud before it gets any worse."

Dumars' third 3-pointer of the first quarter capped a 10-2 run and opened a 30-18 advantage for the Pistons.

Stackhouse scored six points as the Pistons started the second quarter with a 13-2 spurt. A 3-pointer by Jud Buechler with 5:50 left in the quarter capped the run and opened a 43-24 lead for the Heat.

Detroit held a 58-44 halftime advantage after shooting 57 percent from the field. The Pistons maintained a double-digit lead for most of the third quarter, but a 3-pointer by Hardaway in the final seconds pulled Miami within 75-67.

However, the Pistons opened the fourth quarter with a 15-5 run to seal the win. Stackhouse scored seven of Detroit's 15 points and converted all seven of his free throw attempts in the final quarter. A pair of free throws by Hunter capped the run and gave Detroit a 90-72 lead with 5:48 remaining.

"They played an exceptional game," Riley said. "Stackhouse really took it to the basket for them and was able to get to the foul line. I was disappointed in our lack of assertiveness."

The game was played before a sellout crowd at Miami Arena.

"I was surprised by the crowd," Hill said. "I was really impressed with the enthusiasm. It was like there was no lockout for the fans. I hope we get the same support in Detroit."
