Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Kendall Gill had 15 points, 11 rebounds and five assists as the undermanned New Jersey Nets posted their first victory of the season, 79-69 over the Atlanta Hawks.

Less than 24 hours after the teams met in a physical battle, New Jersey was the worse for wear. The Nets, without guards Sam Cassell, Kerry Kittles and Eric Murdock, were forced to turn to Gill at the point -- a position he had not played since high school.

But with the game tied 66-66 with 4:40 left, Gill took the ball to the basket, was fouled on three separate occasions and made all six free throws. Keith Van Horn added four points and Chris Gatling three in the game-ending 13-3 run.

"Two years ago, we probably would not have known how to do that," Gill said, when asked about overcoming injuries to win. "We are missing some guys but the guys we have here can play. No matter who goes down, there has to be somebody ready to take his position."

Van Horn, who followed Saturday's 29-point performance with 24 tonight, repeatedly took advantage of the slower Alan Henderson, scoring 18 points over the final 24 minutes.

"We knew that if we just came out and played hard that good things would happen and they did," Van Horn said. "We just have to stay focused and execute."

Steve Smith, who scuffled with Gill after Saturday's game, scored 24 points for Atlanta. Playing for the third straight night, the Hawks suffered their first loss.

With the compressed schedule, teams playing three straight nights is a necessity but still relatively new to players and coaches.

"We did play three days in a row but that is no excuse," said Smith. "We still had our chance in the fourth quarter. We played a very ugly game all night but especially in the end. They just got a little lucky and our game turned a little sloppy."

"They played well," added Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens. "I don't take anything away from them, they were definitely the fresher team. We had to play three straight games and these guys are not used to that. We are going to have to get used to it pretty quickly."

The fatigue factor may have had an effect on both teams, particularly Atlanta. The Hawks were just 23-of-78 (30 percent) from the field and 2-of-11 from three-point range. They also got outrebounded 46-36 and committed 19 turnovers.

The Nets, who established team-record lows for opponent's field goals and opponent's field goal percentage, were not much better themselves. They shot just 26-of-65 (40 percent) and were 4-of-14 in the fourth quarter.

But New Jersey got 13 rebounds from Jayson Williams, made 9-of-10 free throws in the final quarter and picked up key performances from rookie Earl Boykins and Scott Burrell off the bench.

"Although Jayson did not score, he gave us a great effort," added Van Horn. "His defense and rebounding, he put on an exhibition at the defensive end."

Boykins, a 5-5 guard, sparked the Nets with six points in the second quarter and provided some clutch minutes in the backcourt. Burrell, who was disappointing in Saturday's, made 5-of-9 field goals and scored 16 points.

"This team has to realize that they can win every game," said Burrell, who was part of a championship organization in Chicago last year. "Not every game, but be in every game, if they put their minds to it. We can compete with every team in this league."

Atlanta got just 19 points from its bench, which combined to shoot 8-of-27 and grab just five rebounds.
