Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- J.R. Reid is making the most of his opportunities.

With Glen Rice and Anthony Mason sidelined with injuries, Reid took over late in the game and led the Charlotte Hornets to their first win of the season, a 94-91 victory over the Miami Heat.

Reid, who was a part of some awful Hornets teams during his first tenure with the squad in the late 1980s, made sure this year's squad wouldn't endure a long losing streak to open the season. After dropping a pair of games over the weekend, Charlotte received 19 points from their 1989 first-round pick and 18 from David Wesley.

"At the beginning of the season I told the guys that we never wanted to lose more than two in a row," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "Tonight, we stepped up against a good team and got a great win."

"Winning is the big thing," Reid said. "The guys came out and played hard. Everyone was contributing. We're starting to feel comfortable out there together."

With the game tied, 88-88, Reid hit a jump hook in the lane with 72 seconds left. After a free throw by Miami's P.J. Brown, Reid drew a foul and converted a pair from the line with 42 seconds to go.

Miami's Tim Hardaway hit a driving layup with 31 seconds to play to move the Heat within 92-91. As the game and shot clocks wound down, Reid missed a driving layup but got his own rebound. Reid found Wesley, who was fouled and made both free throws to seal the victory.

"J.R. hit that big fadeaway hook, then we missed that rebound," Hardaway lamented.

Reid spent 3 1/2 seasons with the Hornets during his first stint. He played for San Antonio and New York and spent a season in Europe before re-signing with Charlotte as a free agent in July 1997. He averaged just 4.9 points and 2.7 rebounds in just over 14 minutes per game last season.

But with the injuries to Rice and Mason, Reid is averaging 13.3 points and six rebounds in 32 minutes per contest. Rice is out following elbow surgery and Mason is done for the season with a ruptured bicep.

Hardaway made seven 3-pointers and finished with 32 points for Miami, which fell to 1-2. Former Hornet Alonzo Mourning added 29 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Miami was also hurt by the absence of forward Jamal Mashburn, who sat out with a deep thigh bruise after scoring 23 points at New York on Sunday.

"We missed Jamal," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "He's been playing extremely well in preseason and the first two games of the year."

Charlotte trailed by 15 points just over four minutes into the second half but used a 19-4 burst to tie the game by the end of the third quarter. Wesley scored eight points in the run.

"I think we got a really good win tonight," Wesley said. "We got the shots and the tough defense when we needed it."

Mourning scored 19 and Hardaway 18 in the first half as Miami shot 58 percent and opened a 57-51 lead.
