Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Playing without Michael Jordan in a home opener for the first time since 1994, the Chicago Bulls were torched for 30 points by Steve Smith as the Atlanta Hawks posted an 87-71 victory.

Alan Henderson had 14 points and eight rebounds and Grant Long added 14 and seven off the bench for Atlanta, which improved to 3-1 just five days into the season. Dikembe Mutombo had 11 points and 14 boards for the Hawks, who snapped a seven-game losing streak at Chicago.

"At times it was really different tonight, especially with some of the old Bulls not there," said Smith. "Harp (Ron Harper) and I still had conversations like I did with Michael. But Michael did help me. Playing against him, the best player in the world and the best at my position, helped me a lot."

"You have to credit the Atlanta defense," said Chicago coach Tim Floyd. "They did a good job on us. We did not shoot well, even though we had good looks on the perimeter."

Chicago shot just 37 percent (32-for-87) and lost a home opener for the first time since a 95-71 defeat to the Miami Heat in 1993.

Toni Kukoc, Chicago's most potent offensive weapon with the retirement of Jordan and departure of Scottie Pippen, shot just 6-of-21 from the field and finished with 16 points. Mark Bryant also had 16 points and six boards for the Bulls.

"I missed playing against Michael and Scottie," said Mutombo. "When Dr. J retired someone had to pick up the league and the same thing will have to happen now. But it is easier for now, that's for sure."

Andrew Lang, who had eight points and 10 rebounds, made a jumper from the right sideline to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead 35 seconds into the contest. Chicago would not have another lead as Mookie Blaylock answered with a 22-footer 19 seconds later to spark a 13-0 run. LaPhonso Ellis, who played just 11 minutes, capped the burst with a layup with 8:04 left in the first.

Atlanta's biggest lead of the game came with five minutes to go in the opening quarter when Henderson's 19-footer made it 22-6. Henderson had eight points and five boards in the first quarter and the Hawks held a 30-19 advantage.

The Bulls closed within 35-32 when Bill Wennington's layup capped an 8-0 spurt with 6:15 remaining in the second. But Atlanta answered, using a 9-2 surge late in the quarter to take a 46-37 lead with 70 seconds left in the half.

Chicago managed to cut the deficit to 57-55 when Kukoc had a layup with 4:28 remaining in the third. Smith answered with a running jumper and Mutombo followed with a layup to give Atlanta a 61-55 lead with 3:33 left. Atlanta took a 64-58 lead into the fourth and Chicago came no closer as Long opened the quarter with a dunk and Smith followed with a layup.

"We have a veteran team," Smith said. "Me and Mookie know each other very well. We're the core of the team and with the other veterans that stayed, we have all played toghether for a while. We have a good bench and when they learn we will have a good team this year."
