Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury hit the go-ahead jumper with 43 seconds remaining and the Minnesota Timberwolves avenged their only loss with a 74-70 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

After Mario Elie sank a pair of free throws to draw the Spurs even with 65 seconds left, Marbury drove the lane and nailed a jumper from the foul line that put Minnesota up for good, 70-68.

Avery Johnson and Marbury traded turnovers before the Spurs went to David Robinson, but his shot was blocked by Joe Smith, leading to a dunk by Malik Sealy that gave the Wolves a 72-68 advantage with six seconds left.

Robinson threw down an uncontested to dunk to halve the deficit with four seconds left. Sam Mitchell countered with a pair of free throws with 3.8 seconds to play, sealing the Wolves' second win in three games and paying back the Spurs for Saturday's 96-82 beating.

"At the end of the game, everyone knows that I am going to take that shot," Marbury said. "Nine out of ten times it's going to go in. I wasn't hitting early. That's one thing I learned from Michael Jordan is that you have to keep shooting."

"If you would've told me after the first three games that we'd be 2-1, and we didn't have to play them out, I'd still be sleeping," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "From our players' standpoint, that's a really good start considering we had to play the Spurs. Right now they're ranked as the second-best team in the league, and we had to play them twice in the first three games."

Marbury also talked about the importance of the win.

"This wasn't a statement game. The game (in San Antonio) was supposed to be that statement game. Tonight we had to prove to ourselves that we can play with anyone in the league."

Sealy came off the bench and led Minnesota with 16 points.

Robinson netted 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Spurs, who have dropped consecutive games after winning their first two contests.

"Nobody would mistake us for the Knicks of the '70s. Both teams played their butts off," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "We were careless. We turned the ball over in bad spots. It was the same thing against the Lakers last night. Teams rebound, teams turn the ball over. Minnesota beat us on the offensive board and with loose balls -- two nights in a row that happened to us."

Minnesota held a slim 40-39 lead at the half. But the Spurs started the second half by scoring eight of the first 10 points, capped by Jaren Jackson's 3-pointer to take their biggest lead at 47-42 with 8:53 left in the period.

The Spurs led 56-53 heading into the final quarter as the teams combined for just 30 points in the third quarter.

After scorching the Wolves for 22 points and 14 rebounds on Saturday, reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Tim Duncan had his worst game of the season as he was held to just eight points on 2-of-10 shooting. He did grab 11 rebounds.

"They had a game plan and went out and executed it. They gave me trouble," Duncan said. "I couldn't finish shots and I didn't shoot well."

Each team struggled with its shooting. San Antonio shot 41 percent (28-of-68) while the Wolves finished at 38 percent (34-of-89).

Kevin Garnett struggled to a 6-of-25 performance for the Wolves. But he was able to finish with a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Wolves looked like they were going to blow out the Spurs, who were playing for the fourth time in five nights. Minnesota scored the game's first 10 points, capped by Chris Carr's dunk with 8:32 remaining.

But San Antonio got back in it and knotted the score, 14-14, after Sean Elliot converted a three-point play.

Johnson had his best game of the season for the Spurs, finishing with 12 points and 10 assists. Elie added 11 points off the bench.
