Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Utah Jazz got off to their first 3-0 start this decade with a 90-79 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

The Jazz, who dropped three of their first four games last season, have begun this shortened campaign with a vengeance.

They defeated their NBA Finals nemesis, the Chicago Bulls, in their season opener on Friday and dealt their Western Conference rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, a 100-91 defeat on Sunday.

Utah last opened a season with three straight wins in 1989 and accomplished the feat for just the second time in the 25-year history of the franchise.

Dallas tied the contest, 68-68, on a pair of free throws by rookie Dirk Nowitzki with 9:33 to play. The Jazz answered with a three-point play from Howard Eisley and Bryon Russell's jump shot with 8:44 remaining that gave the Jazz the lead for good, 73-68.

"Once we finally started to execute, run a few screens and do the things we've always done, things started to go a little more in our favor," Utah coach Jerry Sloane said.

Stockton scored 12 points and Eisley added 10 for Utah, which shot 48 percent (37-of-77) from the field while limiting Dallas to 35 percent (26-of-74).

"My focus is on us playing well," Stockton said. "I think that's what puts people in seats. Everyone going out and playing well and hard, scratching and clawing for a victory. People want to see you compete and that's what my focus is."

Cedric Ceballos came off the bench to lead Dallas in scoring for the third straight game, collecting 19 points before fouling out with less than a minute to play.

Dallas has dropped seven straight against Utah and has defeated the Jazz just four times in the last 34 encounters. Fatigue may have been a factor for the Mavericks, who went to overtime in both of their first two contests.

Dallas did see some production from Nowitzki, the 20-year-old German wonder, who had 15 points and nine rebounds. Michael Finley also scored 15 points for the Mavericks, who committed 19 turnovers.

"It was exciting because I had a really good start," said Nowitzki of his home debut. "We got a good rhythm coming out and that was great. But then I struggled a bit in the third quarter. It was a big game for me in front of the home crowd. There's a lot of Germans here in Texas. I even saw the German flag."

Utah held a 45-44 edge on the boards and scored 21 points off Dallas turnovers in a game that featured six lead changes and nine ties.

The Mavericks pulled within 73-72 on jumper by Nowitzki with 7:35 to go, but Stockton made a free throw after an illegal defense call on Dallas and Malone scored on a driving layup on the ensuing possession to open a 76-72 lead with just over six minutes left. Utah outscored Dallas 14-7 the rest of the way.

Dallas point guard Steve Nash had a less than stellar night, scoring four points on 1-of-9 shooting in 29 minutes. Robert Pack picked up the slack off the bench with 11 points in 21 minutes.

The Mavericks held a 45-41 lead at the half, but the Jazz battled back and forged a 64-64 deadlock after three quarters.

"We did a real job for three quarters and they turned their defense up and we went cold at the wrong time in the fourth quarter," said Dallas coach Don Nelson. "We really had a hard time scoring. We didn't click on all of all cylinders and we didn't shoot a good enough percentage to win against a good team."
