Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 20 points in just three quarters and the Seattle SuperSonics continued their domination of the Golden State Warriors with a 90-71 wire-to-wire victory.

Dale Ellis added 13 points, Hersey Hawkins had 10 and six rebounds as Seattle beat Golden State for the 24th time in the last 28 meetings. Olden Polynice added nine boards for the SuperSonics, who have won seven straight and 13 of 14 against the Warriors in Seattle.

Seattle, under new coach Paul Westphal, is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since beginning the 1993-94 campaign with 10 straight victories. These teams meet again at Golden State on Wednesday.

"If we keep rebounding and playing defense, I like our chances," Westphal said. "If we start making baskets, you really might see something."

John Starks led Golden State with 12 points and Chris Mills chipped in with 10 and eight rebounds. The Warriors, who began last season with nine consecutive defeats, fell to 0-3.

The Sonics ran off six straight points to start the game and took a 13-4 lead with 5:54 left when Polynice hit one of two free throws.

After Starks hit a 3-pointer 13 seconds later, Seattle closed out the quarter with a 10-3 spurt to seize a 23-10 advantage.

"It was a terrible start," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We weren't sharp early. We got some touch fouls and got some people in foul trouble. We got the ball inside a few times early and got the ball stripped. The Sonics came out aggressive which they usually are. This building is not an easy building to play in. Between turnovers and foul trouble, it just mushroomed."

The Sonics maintained a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the contest, going up by as much as 24 points for the first of many times with 10:27 left in the third on Billy Owens' 13-foot jumper.

Down the stretch, the closest Golden State could get was 13 points as Jason Caffey converted the second of two free throws with 3:54 left in the third.

With 13 of 14 players notching at least a point, Seattle shot 45.8 percent (33-for-72) from the field. The Sonics collected 46 points in the paint while the Warriors had just five. They beat Golden State in the running game as well, with 18 fast-break points, compared to six.

Caffey scored nine points in 17 minutes for the Warriors, who shot 35.2 percent (25-for-71).

Both teams were poor from the free-throw line as Golden State converted 16-of-30 attempts (53.3 percent) while Seattle was barely better at 57.1 percent (20-of-35).
