Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Mike Bibby got the best of Michael Olowokandi in a battle of the NBA's top two draft picks as the Vancouver Grizzlies won for the first time this season, 105-99 over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Bibby, the second overall pick, had the best game of his young career with 18 points and 12 assists. He also had a key three-point play with 51 seconds remaining that gave the Grizzlies a 100-93 advantage. In his previous two games, Bibby scored 14 points on 15 percent shooting (4-of-26).

After Bibby's three-point play, Lamond Murray hit a jumper and Lorenzen Wright converted a layup to pull the Clippers within 100-97 with 23 seconds left. But Bibby hit 1-of-2 free throws and Bryant Reeves rebounded Bibby's miss and hit a foul shot to make it 102-97 with 13 seconds remaining.

"Well, we got a win and that feels good and I finally shot good," Bibby said. "There were a lot of positives, although I have to cut down on my turnovers. I think we did good, but we could play better."

"There were comparisons made tonight between myself and Bibby, obviously. I have to take my hat off to him. He made some great plays tonight and composed his team," Olowokandi said. "He made an unbelievable shot down the stretch where he got fouled. He really contributed to their win."

Murray's free throws cut the deficit to three points with 12 seconds to go, but Reeves hit another free throw and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added two of his 12 fourth-quarter foul shots to seal the win.

Abdur-Rahim scored 19 of his 35 points in the final quarter for the Grizzlies, who won for the first time after suffering a pair of double-digit losses. Abdur-Rahim connected on 9-of-20 floor shots and 16-of-17 from the line as he finished two points shy of his career high.

Abdur-Rahim struggled his first two games, scoring a total of 26 points on 28 percent shooting (8-of-29).

"We were out there tonight playing very hard and together," Abdur-Rahim said. "We were sharing the ball and helping out on defense. From the start, we came out aggressive. When you do that, you have a good chance to win."

Olowokandi also had his best game as he finished with 17 points and nine rebounds in 33 minutes off the bench. Murrray scored 21 points to lead the Clippers, who fell to 0-3.

"We're definitely not on the same page. Three guys remember one play here and than only two or three remember the next defensive assignement," Murray said. "We're not clicking as a team yet."

The Clippers trailed 85-80 with 7:39 left after Olowokandi, who made 5-of-10 shots, hit a hook. But Abdur-Rahim scored six straight points, capped by a layup, to give Vancouver a 91-80 cushion with 5:26 to play.

Abdur-Rahim hit two free throws to give the Grizzlies a seemingly safe 95-84 advantage with 2:57 left. Los Angeles was able to get within 97-93 with 68 seconds left on Murray's driving layup.

Murray was 6-of-17 from the floor, 8-of-11 from the line and added nine rebounds.

With a 16-13 lead in the first quarter, the Grizzlies used a 15-3 surge fueled by six points from Abdur-Rahim to take their biggest lead at 31-16. Vancouver held a 10-point lead after one quarter and a 53-45 advantage at intermission.

The Clippers shot 48 percent (35-of-73) while Vancouver finished at 43 percent (35-of-82).
