Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Charles Barkley scored half his 16 points in the fourth quarter, including six in a decisive run, and continued controlling the boards as the Houston Rockets pulled out a 105-95 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

With his team trailing 84-83 and 8:40 to play, Barkley took command. He sank two free throws that put the Rockets ahead for good and sparked the pivotal 14-4 burst.

Barkley followed with a six-footer and later added a pair of foul shots before rookie Michael Dickerson capped the burst with a 3-pointer for a 97-88 cushion with 2:05 remaining.

Following a Houston turnover, Dallas had a chance to cut into a 97-92 deficit. But Samaki Walker missed a jumper and Barkley grabbed the rebound. Less than a minute later, he came down with the ball after a battle under the boards following a missed free throw by Robert Pack.

Barkley, who turns 36 next week, entered the contest leading the league in rebounding at 17.5 per game. He continued his impressive cleaning of the glass, pulling down seven of his 15 boards in the final 12 minutes.

"We've played good defense and we haven't given up 100 points this year," Barkley said. "It's a nice deal for us, now we just have to keep building on it."

The other area where Barkley has been important has been as a tutor, joining fellow future Hall of Famers Scottie Pippen and Hakeem Olajuwon in aiding the improvement of Dickerson, fellow rookie Cuttino Mobley and Othella Harrington.

Dickerson scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half. Mobley added eight and Harrington contributed 13, helping the Rockets defeat Dallas for the 10th straight time.

"I'm really happy with our team's defense," said Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "Here is a tremendously explosive running team in Dallas, and we held them to six points on the fast break. That helps you win on the road."

Pippen registered 15 points but Olajuwon was limited to eight for Houston, which had won four in a row since a season-opening loss to the high-powered Los Angeles Lakers. Both Pippen and Olajuwon had baskets in the key run down the stretch.

"Tonight, I struggled in the first half and then I got myself warmed up offensively," Pippen said. "When we score like that, it makes us a very tough team."

Pack scored 31 points, 10 more than his season total through three games. He came off the bench to replace starting point guard Steve Nash, who saw limited action after breaking his nose in the first quarter.

Michael Finley contributed 15 points on 4-of-14 shooting for the Mavericks but leading scorer Cedric Ceballos was held to 10, getting harassed in a joking manner throughout the contest by Barkley, his former Phoenix Suns teammate.

"In certain situations, like this, we're losing games. But you can't put your head down," Ceballos said. "Those teams we've played have a nucleus forming and they know what is going on in the fourth quarter."

A tight first half ended with Houston ahead, 58-54. The Rockets maintained a slim lead through the third quarter until reeling off eight straight points, capped by Barkley's follow of Pippen's miss that made it 71-60.

Dallas refused to go away, scoring nine of the next 11 points. Finley's six-footer cut the margin to four, and the Mavs trailed 79-75 heading to the final period.

A 3-pointer and two free throws by Hubert Davis gave Dallas an 82-81 lead with 9:40 to go. But those were the only points he scored and the Mavs managed only two baskets over the next five minutes.

Dallas shot 40 percent (33-of-83) and collected only 10 assists, four more than Barkley.

"We have some players that aren't playing the way they're capable of playing," said Mavs coach Don Nelson. "They need to get their rhythm back.

Nelson felt optimistic that his team, having started the season 1-3, can begin to turn things around with an upcoming seven-game road trip, which starts Friday in Denver.

"I think that we will find ourselves on the road," he said. "The pressure of playing at home affects a young team and I'm glad to be going. I think that by the time we get back, we'll be a better team."

Pack made 11-of-20 field goals and 9-of-11 free throws but also commmitted four turnovers and handed out just three assists. Nash had three turnovers and 21 assists through the first three games.

Stanley Roberts chipped in 10 points for Houston, which atoned for a 21-of-34 effort from the foul line by hitting 51 percent (37-of-73) from the floor, including 10-of-17 from 3-point range. Dickerson was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and Pippen hit 3-of-5.

"Stanley Roberts and Michael Dickerson stepped up for us tonight," Barkley added. "It was a good win for us, we're glad to get this game. I just want to win."
