Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Bryon Russell scored nine of his career-high 25 points in overtime as the Utah Jazz continued the best start in franchise history with a 120-112 victory over the pesky Sacramento Kings.

Karl Malone finished with 26 points and a key three-point play in the final minute for the Jazz, who improved to 6-0. Shandon Anderson netted five points in the extra session as Utah scored 17 points in the overtime, five less than it scored in the fourth quarter.

"It sounds like a broken record, but we're thankful for the win," said Jazz guard John Stockton, who totaled 10 points and 15 assists. "We did some nice things down the stretch, I thought, a lot of guys made some really big plays for us."

Chris Webber scored 26 points before fouling out and rookie Jason Williams added 19 as Sacramento erased a 13-point third-quarter deficit. The Kings have lost nine straight games at the Delta Center and 17 of their last 19 visits to Utah.

"We just couldn't get over the hump for some reason, then in overtime, having Vlade (Divac) and Chris both foul out, really hurt us," said Kings coach Rick Adelman.

Williams' third 3-pointer of the fourth quarter gave the Kings a 103-100 lead with 47 seconds to go, but Malone drew a foul on Webber attempting a 3-pointer 16 seconds later. He hit all three free throws to tie the game. After a timeout, Williams fired the ball into Webber, whose hook shot spun out.

Lawrence Funderburke's follow shot was blocked from behind by Russell, and Funderburke compounded the miss by fouling Thurl Bailey with 10.1 seconds to play in regulation. But Bailey missed both free throws, giving the Kings another chance. But Williams' 30-footer bounced off the back of the rim.

"We've got to keep working hard and try to get better as a team each day in practice," said Williams. "I think we can be as good as the Jazz when we've played together as long as they have, we have to just keep working hard and do what the coaches ask us to do."

Utah scored the first seven points of overtime as Anderson had a layup and driving eight-footer around a 3-pointer by Russell, opening a 112-105 lead with 2:51 to play.

The Kings closed within 113-110 after Corliss Williamson made the second of two free throws with 51 seconds left. But Malone and John Stockton worked a pick-and-roll successfully, with Malone scoring as he was fouled by Williamson. Malone made the free throw to make it a six-point game, and after a missed 3-pointer by Williams, Russell sealed the deal with a dunk in transition.

"We did it all as a team, I think Shandon and I just hit some big shots that were there for us in the overtime, but we did it as a collective group," said Russell.

After a basket by Malone gave Utah its largest lead at 79-66 with 3:12 to play in the third quarter, Webber and Predrag Stojakovic combined for 13 points in an 18-4 tear bridging the quarters as the Kings took an 84-83 lead with 6:45 to go in regulation on a layup by Stojakovic.

The lead changed hands four times before a 3-pointer by Stojakovic gave Sacramento a 98-95 lead with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter. Two free throws by Stockton and one by Bailey tied the game, 98-98, but Webber had a dunk off a feed from Williams at the 1:18 mark. Thirteen seconds later, Malone drew Vlade Divac's sixth foul and hit two free throws to knot the game, 100-100.

Stockton scored all 10 of his points in the second half and overtime for the Jazz, who shot 54 percent (43-of-80) from the field. Howard Eisley added 15 points off the bench on 7-of-9 shooting, while Anderson netted 13 and Bailey nine. Utah's bench accounted for 43 points on 19-of-30 shooting.

Sacramento's reserves also were productive as Stojakovic netted 16 points, Funderburke had 12 and Jon Barry 10. Williams was 6-of-17 from the field but 4-of-9 from 3-point range and had seven assists and four steals.
