Game Story

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Sam Mack scored 22 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 20, leading the Vancouver Grizzlies to their fourth straight win over the winless Los Angeles Clippers, 93-89, in double overtime.

Mack, who hit a franchise-record eight 3-pointers on Sunday against Dallas, netted one of his game-high four field goals from beyond the arc to tie the contest, 82-82, with 3:24 left in the first overtime.

A jumper and free throw by Abdur-Rahim made it 85-82 with 1:04 to play, but a 24-second violation by the Grizzlies gave the Clippers new life. Lamond Murray took advantage, draining a 27-footer with 18.5 seconds left to force a second overtime.

In the second extra session, Vancouver held a 90-87 lead with the ball and less than one minute left. Rookie Mike Bibby missed a 20-footer but got his own rebound and was fouled. He made one free throw with 22.5 seconds to play and Abdur-Rahim later added a pair of foul shots to seal the victory.

At 3-3, Vancouver is off to its best six-game start in franchise history. Los Angeles is 0-6, but is still well short of the worst start in club history. The Clippers went 0-16 to open the 1994-95 season.

"This is the toughest kind of loss," said Clippers forward Maurice Taylor, who finished with 21 points and 20 rebounds. "You put out all you effort and still come out short, and so it is frustrating."

Los Angeles shot only 21 percent from 3-point range and missed half its 32 free throws.

"We had a lot of open looks, but the ball just did not fall," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "I really feel for these guys becuase I know how much they wanted this win, but I know they will bounce back."

The rebounds for Taylor, who played 53 minutes, were a career high. Los Angeles, which played the first of six games at the Arrowhead Pond, fell to 0-2 in overtime this season. The Clippers went 3-5 in Anaheim last season.

Abdur-Rahim scored seven points and Mack had a pair of 3-pointers in the first 3:34 of the game as Vancouver bolted to a 13-0 lead. The Grizzlies extended the lead to 20-4 with 4:16 left before settling for a 23-14 advantage after 12 minutes behind 11 points from Abdur-Rahim.

"Thank God we got off to that start," Grizzlies coach Brian Hill said. "We needed every one of those points. It would have been easy to fold tonight, but the guys stepped up and made the plays that we had to make down the stretch."

The Clippers opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run over the first 76 seconds. Lorenzen Wright netted five of his 15 points during that spurt, pulling Los Angeles within 23-21. Vancouver held a 43-39 lead at intermission.

Bryant Reeves scored six straight points late in the third quarter to give the Grizzlies a 61-55 lead entering the fourth quarter. They extended that cushion to 68-57 with 9:05 left in regulation on Reeves' three-point play.

But the Clippers reeled off the next 13 points, including six by Darrick Martin. A three-point play by Taylor gave the Clippers a 70-68 advantage with 4:29 remaining.

With the game tied at 75-75, Abdur-Rahim had a chance to win the game in regulation but Taylor blocked his jumper.

"I don't believe in moral victories, but we did some good things out there tonight," Martin said. "We need to start getting some W's because it doesn't mean anything if you don't win."

This was the second meeting in a week of the top two overall selections in the draft. Bibby got the better of top pick Michael Olowokandi once again, collecting 17 points and five assists. Olowokandi had 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Reeves scored 15 points and Michael Smith grabbed 15 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot just 39.6 percent (36-of-91) from the field.

Clippers guard Sherman Douglas left the contest in the third quarter with a strained left groin. Douglas injured it during the second period, but tried to play through the pain. His status for Saturday's game against Dallas is unknown.
