Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- John Starks hit two key baskets to ignite a 15-6 game-ending run as the Golden State Warriors handed the Charlotte Hornets their fourth straight loss, 96-87.

With the score tied 81-81, Starks hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Warriors the lead for good with 5:40 remaining.

Bimbo Coles, who contributed 13 points and nine assists off the bench, nailed a jumper to give Golden State its biggest lead at 87-81 with 4:52 left before Bobby Phills hit a running jumper 19 seconds later to pull Charlotte within 87-83.

Terry Cummings answered with a short jumper and Coles made 1-of-2 free throws to push the lead to 90-83 with 2:13 to play. David Wesley, who had 14 points and 10 assists, drilled a jumper to cut the deficit to five points but that was as close as Charlotte would get.

Starks scored 14 points and Erick Dampier grabbed 18 rebounds to give the Warriors (3-5) their first three-game winning streak since closing last season with three straight wins, completing a 19-63 campaign. Golden State did not collect its third win until its 18th game last season.

"I figured the way to get back is to hit the boards and play hard on defense," Dampier said. "I know I can play better. I feel like I'm a long way from where I can be. I'm still making some mistakes."

J.R. Reid matched a career high with 29 points and also had 10 rebounds for Charlotte. Reid also scored 29 points on March 6, 1993, when he was a member of the San Antonio Spurs.

Early on, it looked as though the Hornets were going to snap their slide. After Jason Caffey's dunk brought the Warriors within 6-4, Derrick Coleman sank a short jumper to ignite a 14-0 spurt. Coleman scored eight points in the burst, including a dunk that capped it with 4:43 left in the period.

Reid, who contributed six points in that run, connected on 11-of-17 shots and Coleman hit 9-of-16 for the Hornets, who shot 47 percent (36-of-76).

"Tonight, I was open. I hit a lot of jumpers," Reid said. "Who knows? Tomorrow it might be Dave Wesley. When you're shorthanded, you've just got to get it done. When you're a frazzled team, when you're broken down, you still have to play hard."

Trailing 29-16 after one quarter, the Warriors responded with a 20-4 surge. Starks had five points in the burst and Caffey capped the run with a dunk that gave Golden State a 36-33 lead with 4:33 left before intermission.

"I thought it was a great team win," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "The guys who came off the bench in the first quarter were great when we were sleepwalking. You've gotta talk about the guys off the bench. Coles was clearly the best player on the floor."

Reid sank a pair of free throws with 2:46 left in the third quarter to give the Hornets their biggest lead of the second half at 66-59. But Golden State closed the quarter on a 9-4 spurt to close within 70-68.

Rookie Antawn Jamison pulled down 13 rebounds for Golden State and helped the Warriors to a 55-39 advantage on the glass.
