Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse had 23 points and 10 assists and hit a 3-pointer to ignite a crucial 10-2 fourth-quarter run as the Detroit Pistons snapped a five-game losing streak with a 101-93 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Cliff Robinson connected on two free throws with 7:17 remaining to give the Suns an 80-79 advantage before Stackhouse drilled a 3-pointer to begin the game-deciding spurt.

Grant Hill contributed 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Pistons, who were winless since opening the season with three straight victories. They concluded a stretch of three games in three days Wednesday with a 91-80 loss to the Miami Heat.

"Two days ago we felt terrible," Hill said. "This was the biggest win for us in about two years. I can't explain it, it just is."

Robinson scored 26 points for the Suns, who shot 7-of-21 from the field in the fourth quarter. Tom Gugliotta grabbed 15 rebounds for Phoenix but scored just four points -- 16 below his average -- on 2-of-10 shooting.

"We missed several lay-ins at crucial times that were uncontested," said Suns coach Danny Ainge. "That was a big key. We were coming back, and if we make even a couple of them, they have to call a timeout and momentum is in our favor. But we couldn't crack it."

The Suns went 30-11 at home last season but have dropped three of their first five games at America West Arena this year.

The game was tied 71-71 entering the fourth quarter and neither team could take more than a three-point advantage over he first five minutes of the final period. But that changed with 6:54 left when Stackhouse drilled a 3-pointer.

Robinson found Danny Manning for a layup to make it a two-point contest, but Detroit scored the next seven points to take control. Hill drove for a layup, Lindsay Hunter nailed a 3-pointer and Bison Dele threw down a dunk to give the Pistons a 90-81 lead with 3:27 advantage.

The Suns would get as close as six points down the stretch, the last time when Jason Kidd's layup with just under a minute left made it 94-88. But Dele had a dunk and Stackhouse hit two from the line with 25 seconds to go as Detroit hung on.

"That's the best we've done so far," said Pistons coach Alvin Gentry. "That's what we've been talking about. We're a really good team when we move our bodies and we move the ball. We had 41 field goals and 28 assists. That's good team basketball."

Dele tallied 15 points, 11 rebounds and five assists and Hunter added 15 points and five assists for Detroit, which shot 48 percent (41-of-86) and went 9-of-17 from 3-point range.

Don Reid's seven rebounds helped the Pistons build a 50-38 advatantage on the boards.

"Bison Dele gives us presence," added Gentry. "He gives us a presence on the inside that we can throw the ball to. Tonight he played with some much energy and when he plays that way we are a good team."

George McCloud netted 11 points and Manning came off the bench to contribute 10 for the Suns, who shot just 42 percent (34-of-81) despite going 9-of-17 from beyond the arc. The Suns committed only 14 turnovers while turning 18 Detroit miscues into 16 points.

The Pistons played without starting shooting guard Joe Dumars, who is still being bothered by a strained right hamstring.

Detroit opened the game with a 19-3 spurt that featured six points from Hill and led 27-15 after one quarter. But the second period belonged to the Suns.

Trailing 40-24 with 5:18 left in the first half after Eric Montross' dunk, Phoenix closed the quarter on a 22-6 run. The Suns used the long-range jumper to get back into the contest as Kidd, Robinson and McCloud combined to score 12 straight points from beyond the arc.

"We knew that we got a lot of good looks early," Kidd said. "It was just that they weren't going down. I've been in that situation before. We knew we could get back in it if we focused on the defensive end."

McCloud drilled consecutive 3-pointers, the second bringing the Suns within 43-38. A 3-pointer by Robinson with 14 seconds left in the half gave Phoenix a 46-43 lead, but Jud Buechler forced a halftime tie by hitting a 3-pointer with 5.1 seconds left.

"We had the momentum but we had breakdown in the second," said Stackhouse. "At the end of the half we got a big bucket and at the half Alvin lit a fire under us. We desperately needed that win. With a team like that which is so offensively potent, you know they are going to make a run. But we made it happen in the fourth quarter."
