Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- John Starks scored four of his 16 points in a game-ending 9-0 run as the resurgent Golden State Warriors extended their longest winning streak in more than three years with an 84-79 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Starks also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and dished out seven assists and reserve forward Antawn Jamison chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds for Golden State, which has won four straight since opening the season 0-5.

The Warriors had not won four in a row since December 29, 1995-January 5, 1996. They did not earn their fourth win last season until the 20th game.

Michael Finley scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Gary Trent added a season-high 18 and nine for Dallas, which has lost seven straight since its lone win, a 102-99 double-overtime triumph over Golden State on February 7.

The Warriors took a 75-65 lead on a free throw by Tony Delk with 6:37 left in the fourth quarter but Dallas ran off the next 14 points.

Trent scored eight during the spurt, including a driving layup that tied the game at 75-75 with 3:18 left. He added a 10-foot jumper from the right side 43 seconds later to put the Mavericks on top, 77-75.

After Shawn Bradley made a pair of free throws, Golden State regrouped. Starks converted two free throws, then found his former New York Knicks teammate Chris Mills for a 3-pointer from the right corner that gave the Warriors an 80-79 lead with 1:39 remaining.

"I hadn't shot the ball too much in the game," said Mills, who was 4-for-7 from the field. "I felt really good before the ball even found me. I was already spotted up and I said, `If the ball comes to me, I'm ready.' I knew John was going to find me. I enjoy taking shots like that. I have a lot of confidence that I could make those shots. I've been in those situations before."

"We call it a drag play," Starks explained. "I come across the lane and I told Damp (Erick Dampier) to set a pick to put pressure on Finley. I gave (Finley) a choice. He was going to take me or Chris. He decided to stop the ball. Me and Chris have played together. I know where he likes the ball."

After a timeout, Finley missed scoring chances on three straight possessions. Starks hit a running jumper with 10.8 seconds left to give Golden State a three-point lead before Jason Caffey picked off Cedric Ceballos' inbounds pass and slamed down a dunk for an 84-79 advantage.

"I tried to get the ball to Gary (Trent)," Ceballos said. "Maybe I should have thrown the ball a little harder, maybe he should have come to get it. It was a bad play on both of our parts. Jason Caffey made a great play on it, a risky play, but he made it. It takes away from being a terrible play because he made the steal."

Felton Spencer contributed a season-high 11 points and eight rebounds and Bimbo Coles had eight points and seven assists as Golden State's bench continued to contribute. During their streak, Warriors' reserves have outscored the opponents' bench, 182-86.

Steve Nash scored 14 points and Robert Pack had 10 for the Mavericks, who allowed Golden State 46 points in the paint while scoring only 22.

"We had the run and got up by four," said Bradley, who finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and a season-high eight blocks. "The momentum was going our way. The great steal at the end prevented us from getting a shot to tie. This is definitely the toughest loss of the year, it is for me. I can tell from Steve (Nash) and Michael. I know the general feeling is pretty down because we played like we should have won."
