Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat continued to make a mockery of the condensed NBA schedule, winning for the fourth time in six days, 81-71 over the Houston Rockets.

P.J. Brown totaled 24 points and 15 rebounds for Miami, which became the first team to win three games in as many days with a 91-80 victory at Detroit on Wednesday. Despite the absence of injured starters Jamal Mashburn and Voshon Lenard, the Heat have won five in a row overall in the last 10 days.

"The team was stunned and embarrassed by their 1-3 start," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Now they're working harder."

Miami held Houston to a franchise record-low nine points in the third quarter and continued a 20-4 run 30 seconds into the fourth period. Blue Edwards' basket with 11:30 to play gave the Heat their biggest lead, 62-46.

"They were the team that made the adjustments at halftime," Houston forward Scottie Pippen said. "They came out and showed it on the court."

Othella Harrington, playing for the injured Charles Barkley, had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Hakeem Olajuwon added 16 and 13 for Houston, which closed to 66-62 on rookie Cuttino Mobley's free throw with 5:46 to play but could get no closer.

Pippen could not help the Rockets snap a six-game losing streak in the series. He missed his first eight shots and finished with 10 points.

"I wasn't getting the shots," he said. "I don't like to force anything and take us out of rhythm. I wasn't feeling down or angry. We're on the road, playing a good team on their home court. So I didn't have any reason to feel bad. I would much rather end the game with a win and have a zero by my name."

Brown and Tim Hardaway dominated play in the third quarter, combining for 20 points and five rebounds. Hardaway, who had 17 points and 11 assists, tied the game 44-44 on a driving layup with 7:19 left and 43 seconds later gave the Heat the lead for good with one of his three 3-pointers.

Houston grabbed its last lead at 44-42 on Harrington's six-foot hook with 8:31 left in the third period, then went 10 1/2 minutes without a basket.

"We had a great game plan, especially with Hakeem and Scottie Pippen," Miami swingman Dan Majerle said. "We didn't want those two guys to beat us. The whole team understood that. We were together and limited their effectiveness."

Pippen snapped the drought with his first basket two minutes into the fourth quarter, drilling a 3-pointer to cut Miami's lead to 62-51. His 3-pointer from the right sideline with 6:27 to play continued a 16-4 spurt and got Houston within 66-61.

"He's more of a team player and we have what we would call `Pippen Rules,'" Riley said. "You don't want to get him going with a full head of steam coast to coast."

Harrington's driving layup with 2:17 to play helped the Rockets get within five at 73-68. But veteran Terry Porter answered with a jumper and the Heat led by at least seven points the rest of the way.

Brown shot 10-of-14 from the field as Miami overcame a combined 4-of-18 shooting performance from starters Alonzo Mourning and Majerle. The Heat finished at 39 percent (29-of-75).

"I was open and I took the shots," Brown said. "I was feeling good and if they're going to give it to me, I'm going to keep taking it."

Houston, which has not beaten Miami since a 108-97 victory on January 11, 1995, also shot 39 percent (27-of-70). Rookie guards Mobley and Michael Dickerson each were 4-of-13 for nine points.

The Rockets have split four games in the last five days and are 1-2 after a five-game winning streak. Their nine-point third quarter was their lowest for that period and two shy of the franchise record for any quarter set November 15, 1991 against the Los Angeles Lakers.

"There are not many teams that are going to play us as hard as they did consistently for 48 minutes," Harrington said.
